Hello,
From what you have described it sounds like the transmission control solenoid pack is hanging up and needs to be replaced.

When you shut the car off it resets the position of the soleniod allowing it to work for a while before it gets hung up again.

Overtime turning it off and back on again won't anymore.

Are you sure the solenoids were new and installed correctly?
Sometimes the replacments you buy are of a worse quality. Their probably is another issue causing your soleniods to wear faster than they are supposed to and when you install inferior quality replacments they may just wear out quicker. I'm not saying this your problem just an idea.

If you haven't changed the fluid and filter in a while then that definetly would be the next thing I would do before anything else.

You can check your fluid to see if its dark and smells burned or if its clean and lighter colored.

I really hope this gets you headed in the right direction and good luck.
If you feel I've helped in any way please give me a fixya rating,

2000 nissan maxima 110000 miles original owner: transmission slips or seems to disengage while driving rpms go up but no go. Coast for a bit and it all comes back together. It may do fine for many miles...

Check your fluid level but if that is good you need to have the transmission checked. Not what anyone really wants to hear but you have a transmission problem that needs to be repaired.

Transmission won't change gears intermittently.

check trans fluid, if ok....have the vehicle scanned for trouble codes at autozone. this may be an electrical issue.

What is good miles for a 1990 NISSAN MAXIMA ???????

Depends on how well the car was maintained. Cars can last for year and thousands of miles, but here is no magic number. I have 280,000 on my truck, but it has had a transmission replaced and lots work done to it. Engines these days have tighter tolerances and tend to last longer (as long as the timing belt does not break) than they did years ago, but other components may fail long before the engine does. If you are looking at a used card, have a good mechanic inspect it first...$50 to $100 up front is better than hundreds more down the line.
