I have heard you can remove a fuse to disable AWD and improve mpg when AWD is not needed. Is there any truth to this?

I have a 1997 Subaru Outback Limited wagon. I was having major issues with torque binding but didn't have $1k to fix it, so I called a couple of local Subaru dealers and asked their in-house mechanic if there was any issue with putting the fuse in to override it into FWD... both said no. They both said there was no safety issue, nor would it do any type of damage to the car. They said the only issue is that it might wear out the C-Duty Solenoid faster than usual. One of the mechanics said it might happen in 5 days... might be 5wks... might be 5mos or even 5 years... no way of knowing. It was just the luck of the draw.

I've now had it in FWD mode for almost 11mos and there hasn't been an issue one.

Yes, you can disable the 4-wheel drive, but it is not advised that you do so. First, the vehicle is engineered as with an AWD drivetrain. When you disable AWD, you are moving the entire load of the vehicle to the front drivetrain, which is engineered to take about 40% of the total load. You are also driving a vehicle designed with handling characteristics of an AWD in FWD mode. Finally, you are not likely to see any significant difference in fuel economy, as you are still carrying around the mass of the rear wheel drivetrain. The Subaru transfer case is not designed as a direct lockup, like a standard 4-wheel drive setup; it doesn't work against you when it's engaged. Like most things, it's best not to second guess professionals who used years of formal training and experience to design your car.

Yes, this is true, but you should only ever do it if you have to tow the vehicle with the rear wheels on the ground.....which you should avoid at all times.

Just bought 2003 Aztec and the AWD is disabled how do i know if something is wrong . We could not find AWD button ? ??

AWD Disable indicator
The AWD Disable indicator is located in the instrument panel cluster. This lamp is used to inform the driver that the AWD system has been disabled and no torque will be applied to the rear wheels during a slip condition. The AWD Disable indicator is controlled by the powertrain control module via a class 2 message.
Powertrain Control Module
The powertrain control module monitors the data from the ABS controller and Rear Drive Module (RDM) for proper operating conditions. If inappropriate conditions are present the PCM commands the differential clutch pump actuator check valve closed, disabling the AWD system. The PCM also commands the AWD Disable indicator on.

Why does the all-wheel drive keep disengaging when you need it?

Is the All-Wheel Drive Disabled Indicator on ?
An ABS DTC may cause the AWD Disabled light to illuminate. Check for ABS DTCs if no AWD fault is present.

?€¢
The AWD data list can be used to assist in determining which type of fault is causing the AWD Disabled Lamp to illuminate. with a scan tool, verify the above data displays are within specification.
?‡'
AWD temperature disables can be caused by an open circuit.

Using a scan tool, select the Body - Instrument Panel Cluster - Special Functions - Lamp Test mode. In the Lamp Test mode you can turn on or off the instrument panel indicators. All indicators will turn ON when commanded on and OFF when commanded off. The AWD DISABLE indicator should turn on or off as commanded.
?‡'
If the AWD DISABLE indicator is always ON or always OFF, replace the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.

The AWD disable lamp illuminates when one of the following conditions exists for 5 seconds:
?€¢
The PCM commands the solenoid ON and the voltage feedback remains high, B+.

?€¢
The PCM commands the solenoid OFF and the voltage feedback remains low, 0 volts. This condition is present for 3 key cycles.

?€¢
The PCM detects fluid temp is too high.

You need to have this hooked-up to a professional grade scan tool.

Getting 12 mpg, need to do what to improve, have 215,000 miles..

When was the last time the spark plugs and air filter were changed? Also check trunk weight and tire pressure. But honestly, the best way to improve MPG is by how you drive - fast acceleration will burn more fuel, keep the speedometer at an even keel whenever you can vs. constant changes in acc/dec.

98 forester awd rear wheels not engaging runs fine other wise drive shafts, axles all in good shape no noises in drive train. no codes,no check engine light on

Just a thought, Check under bonnett on passenger side is a fuse that when installed dis-engages the rear drive. Remove the fuse to engage the rear drive. Sometimes people see the open fuse holder and fill the slot thinking it is missing. Truth is it is only for short towing. Good luck and have a great day.

What will happen if i remove the shaft for the frontwheel drive from this alwheel drive 1998 chey astro

You will end up destroying the transfer case, The transfer case is electronic and not mechanical as the older ones and the speed sensors will throw off the transfer case, if you lose traction to the rear end in the rain, snow or around a corner. The transfer case may activate and deactivate and without the front drive shaft could result in the transfer case to literately explode, also know as grenade. At that point, your looking at a transfer case and may be a transmission. You van runs on RWD unless the rear wheel start to lose traction and then the encoder motor activates the transfer case turning your astro in too a AWD. This was done to save gas, the older AWD transfer case was casing the idle arm to wear out prematurely and the gas economy was 17 MPG and the new AWD system that you have brought the van to 22 MPG. Why do you want to remove it??? if you do i guess you can disconnect the wire harness to the Encoder motor to the transfer case. Good luck and keep me posted.
