Re: fuel door on my 1993 toyota camry won't open when I...
Get someone to help you. Have them pull up on the handle, whilst you pry open the door with a credit card, or something thin and plastic. Pull open the fuel door. Look to see if there is a bent piece of metal above the hinge. This is the "spring" that pops the fuel door open. If it is not there, it has broken, and needs to be replaced. About 3 dollars at a Toyota Dealer.

Hi Marvin,I just watched this video on your gas cover not releasing,it seems a lot of these Camrys do this. The part that releases it comes loose, here's a video showing you how to fix.Seems it will be easier with 2 people doing it. How to fix fuel tank door opening system Toyota Camry
really sounds like a linkage is off somewhere, could be up at the release inside the door,Sometimes hard to see. Could also be in need of some oil. make sure inside handle is not broke also. hope this helps and good luck.
Hello. The most common cause for your problem is a broken release spring.
Here is what you need to do:
Have a helper pull up the fuel door release. With a credit card, insert it between the door and the body, and pull the door open. When you get the door open, look at the hinged side. There will be a small metal tab. If it is there, bend it out. This is the release spring. If it is not there, you need to get a replacement from a Toyota Parts dept. They are about 2 dollars. Easy to install; slip the old one off, and click the new one in.
Have someone pull the gas door release. With a credit card, or something like it, popsicle stick, nail file, etc, insert it at the side of the door that opens, not the hinged side. While your assistant is pulling the lever, see if you can manually pull the door open. If it opens, you have a broken fuel door spring. Toyota parts depts sell them for 3 dollars. The spring is there to "pop" the door open, when you pull the lever. If it is broken, and they break rather often, it needs replaced.
read the manual. There should be a cable in the trunk you pull as a manual release. If not pull the trunk lining fabric back away from the fuel fill area. You should see how to manually open the gas filler door
More than likely the metal spring on the inside of the gas door is broken where the plastic attaches. Have someone hold the fuel door lever in the release position while you gently use a flat head screw drive to open the door. The part should cost you less than $10 at Toyota.
the cable from the lever to the door has broken. If you look inside the trunk, (sometimes you will have to pull the carpeted side down) right behind the gas door, you will find a short emergency release cable with a loop on the end - grab and pull the loop and your gas door should pop open.
