1999 Isuzu Rodeo: High Idle Returning to Normal after battery disconnection

I have a 99 Isuzu Rodeo and as soon as I turn over then engine, the idle hits to 2500 to 300 rpms. I realized after taking off the battery and a few minutes and putting it back on, the idle returns back to 800 rpms. Then after a day or two the idle starts idling from 1200, then 1500, then 2000. Everytime higher when I turnover the engine and drive.

Before you do anything check the coolant level, not just the reservoir but the radiator(check it when the engine is cold!).

SOURCE: 1999 isuzu rodeo has a high idle in park and

Check your idle air control valve. If not that try your throttle position sensor or your throttle cable may need adjusting.

SOURCE: Fast Idle Problem With 99 Isuzu Rodeo V6

Hi.

If problem is only on startup and when idleing, then the problem is likely IAC system, also a vacuum leak will cause the same problem.

If problem is not only on startup and idle, but also when driving, then MAP sensor and EGR system must be checked.

Check also accelerator cable state and setting.

0f04b3c.jpg

The first thing to do is pulling out the OBDII fault codes stored in the ECM. This is done connecting a code reader to the ECM diagnostic port. The job can be done for a small fee at any local garage, and it is done for free at AutoZone.

The codes will help locating the problem.

About possible faults:

Problem is stalling when idling and during startup, but engine idling fast all the time. Problem not starting at times it is due to the fact that the wrong mixture is being sprayed, this is probably causing flooding and misfire. Since the CEL is on, one of the codes returned is probably misfire.

Check accelerator.

Check IAC system. This is composed by a valve and a solenoid that check and control amount of extra air air when the engine is idling. The IAC valve is located on top of the throttle body.

Check the vacuum system and try cranking with gas tank cap off. Vacuum system is tested using an hand tool gauge onvacuum lines while spraying card cleaner on the hoses (or heating them with a torch). If there is a leak, pressure will go up. A big leak will also do hissing noise, and will often result in a lean code when doing an OBD code scanning.

This kind of symptoms can also be caused by weak wiring to MAP/MAF sensor (MAP in this engine).

If the car also drives very rough and is revving up and down in a weird way, check the EGR valve.

As first thing I would do a code scanning. This car is OBDII. The scan can be done for free at the nearest Autozone, or for a small fee at any garage.

If you get any OBDII code from the scan, report it here, so that we can individuate the possible reason for the problem.

If you repute my solution helpful, then please take some times to accept the solution. Providing good repair tips requires time and skills, and your feedback is important for us.

Regards.

Ginko.

SOURCE: The idle on my 98 Isuzu Rodeo shoots up AFTER driving for awhile, then goes back to normal after killing the engine for awhile. Need some troubleshooting suggestions. Thanks

You more than likely have a idler sensor bad. It could also be a O2 sensor. Is your check engine light on ? If so, you can take it to Auto Zone and they will check it for you for free.

there are 3 , v6 engines, you never said which
why ask us, about parts, we dont sell parts
and would have to read the same books on parts as you
why ask use to do that.?
here is the list
USA only, RODEO, prime examples. the GAS v6 engines. 3.1L 3.2L 6vd1 SOHC, one cam per head, then the optional... 6vd1w DOHC, 2 cams in one head, w = DOHC optioned heads, then came... 3.5L (a stroked out, 3.2L.) 6ve1 are all DOHC engines. and have 24 valves. (6x4) with 2 rear cam sensor, used for VVT and spark both,
the engines must match ,to mix parts

here im at isuzu.com parts page
note it changed on August 99, mfg build dates. so.....
tricky
this will not cause low MPG
it will cause idle controls to be dead.
why not post all symptoms, first. and stop guessing?

94 Isuzu rodeo started to idle high

Vehicles tend to idle higher for two main reasons, as the temperature becomes colder, the engine must work harder to warm itself up so it idles higher to accomplish this faster. The second may be due to a vacuum leak in the engine. Any other symptoms?

High idle around 2000rmp

Most likely is your idle speed timing, there is either an adjusting screw, or you need the dealership to place a diagnostic tool on there threw the computer to set it down some.

2000 isuzu 3.2 rodeo

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Timing
1. With transmission in Neutral or park, start engine and warm to normal operating temp. turn eng,and all accessories off. connect Tachometer. Connect timing light to no 1 spark plug wire.

2. Disconnect and plug fuel vapor canister purge hose and EGR vacuum hose. Start and ensure idle is 900 RPM. adjust idle as required. Check ignition timing ( 12 @ 900)

3. If adjustment is required, loosen distributor hold down bolt and turn until timing is within specification. Tighten distributor hold down bolt and recheck timing. adjust idle speed as required.

hope this helps

Cheers
