Question about 1992 Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

Several months ago I began experiencing a occasional problem with the anti-theft system of my 1992 Nissan Maxima SE 5 speed manual trans. Using my key I unlocked the drivers door and opened the door. The horn would sound and the anti-theft device would function. When I went around to the passenger door and relocked and then unlocked the pass door with my key the horn would stop and I could enter the driver door and start the car. I noticed after a while that when I unlocked the driver door and by turning the key twice to unlock the remaining three doors that if the three other doors unlocked I could open the drivers door and start the car without a problem. If turning the key twice would not unlock the other three doors I knew that opening the driver door would activate the anti-theft so I would automatically go around and unlock the passenger door thus deactivevating the anti-theft. Yesterday, when I unlocked and opened the drivers door, no horn sounded but I was unable to start the engine. The engine cranked over but would not start. I then began locking and unlocking the driver and passenger door in different order but still cannot start the engine. Any suggestions?

Jimmy: it sounds like the drivers door unlock tamper switch or the other switch may have failed. One side can affect the other under certain circumstances. Your trunk lock also has a switch which arms and disarms the antitheft system. Try locking all the doors, make sure the hood and trunk lid are closed and then open the trunk. Leave it open open the drivers door and try to start the car.
If it's a no start. Disconnect the ground battery cable then put the ignition key in the run position in you ignition switch. Reconnect the battery and try to start the car. It should start. This usually will override the anti theft system. One issue with this will be, whether the antitheft system will remain disarmed.
Although I have never tried this before, I know that the system will not arm unless all the doors, trunk and the hood are closed.
I could suggest this to try if the car starts as I had told you pertaining to disconnecting the battery cable, I would take the switch and unbolt it from the passenger's side of the engine compartment just forward of the shock tower. Just let it sit somewhere so it doesn't get caught up in anything moving. If there is a light under the hood of your car, remove the bulb.
Let me know how you make out.

Replaced the fuel pump. the car starts, but won't stay running

The anti-theft system will keep the car from being driven, so I would start there. You may need to reset the anti-theft or check the ignition key for problems.

2000 Nissan Maxima with code P1612, how resolve this problem in my car?

DTC P1612 is a NATS (Nissan Anti Theft System) code.
Cycle the key ON for a second than OFF for 10 do this until the security light goes out.

If not you will have to key the key reprogrammed.

Hope this helps to solve it.

1999 Nissan Maxima-wont start, no injector pulse

I have a service manual. I suppose you are talking about the anti-theft system. It says that if there is power going to the starter when you try and start that the anti-theft system is ok and that means that it is allow the car to start. If there is not power to the starter then your anti-theft system is stopping the car from starting for some reason.

Anti-theft system seems to have been activated?

Some months ago I began starting the engine of my 2001 Chrysler 300M but turned it of before it really started "was sloppy with the key". The anti-theft system went on for some unknown reason. I disarmed it by disconnecting one of the battery connections under the hood with a wrench. I connected it again, the anti-theft system was off but the battery was dead. Battery was OK after recharging, I have had no trouble since then.
