Can't shift Everytime I turn the car on it won't shift - it locks - but eventually it will shift - reason? Also, when driving the car seems to slip. I did have my mechanic check it out thinking it might be the transmission but & he said it seemed to be fine. Any ideas ?

Diane,

It's happened to my Jag S type V8 (2000) twice- resulting in the car being towed to my mechanic.

It's the J-gate shifter-- it's plastic piece that fails when stuck in park (it's not your transmission going out, but that will happen by 60K miles).

Way to avoid getting stuck is to first pull the parking brake before shift from drive into park. And keep the parking brake engaged when you shift from park into drive or reverse (after you have shifted, then release the parking brake). I know it's crazy, but it works! Jag even addresses this in the Owner's Manual.

Beware: the car is a piece of junk- I can't wait to get rid of mine- going on 4 years and nothing but problems, spent over $10K on repairs....

I have an S Type. Avoid parking on any type of incline if possible that is your best solution. Always engage the hand brake before putting the car in park ( I have a BAD habit of not doing this and find myself in this predicament frequently ) You can try to have someone rock the car, its not really good for your transmission. Sometimes the shifter alignment cable moves out of place or the clip attached to it becomes jammed if you have a friend who fixes cars ask them before going to the dealer mine was going to charge me $1800 and I would have had to have it towed another $250. You can also jack up one of the rear tires , this movement of the tire will free up your stuck transmission and you my friend will be good to go. I did this last week and it works!! I hope I have helped you and saved you money as well !!

I have a 2003 Honda Civic hybrid. For some reason while driving and the engine temp goes half ways the car seems like it won’t go into gear. For example when I stop at a stop sign the car won’t catch gear...

Your transmission might have a broken ban . This ring or spacer is between every gear when they go the gears don't line up. Check your trans mission fluid and make sure to use the proper fluid for your make. If the transmission is going it usually starts shifting into gear hard.. It will be jerky then eventually have a problem with one gear which will lead to all gears .

1990 toyota camry wont go into gear or slips out

Could be a long list of things.
Its too late for a filter change. Doing that now would probably make matters worse.
The trans uses electric solenoids and a pump to apply pressure to the clutches. So either could be faulty given the age and mileage.
I'm not sure if the shifting problem is connected to the shift indicator lights problem.
You may need to take it to a trans shop to find out for sure. And they will not want to touch it with that many miles on it.
A regular mechanic might be able to do a pressure test on it to at least find out if it is the pump or not.

Won't go back

If your vehicle is fitted with automatic gear box sounds that you are going to loose the transmission. For not going on reverse like having locked wheels,I believe looks like the brake bands in the gear box are the reason and the minimal power you have for forward drive are the clutches which are slipping. Visit an experts shop and please do not force it.

Shift lever slips out of drive

try taking the center surround out and checking to see there is nothing under the gear selector stopping it from locking in park

Transmission wont shift correctly. If you drive down the road and feather the gas pedel eventually you can get the transmission to shift. We got input and output speed sensors from a junk yard and tried...

Believe it or not, but the throttle position sensor as alot to do with the shifting. Also the range position sensor known as the neutral safety switch.

My 2000 leganza daewoo gears seem to be locked. i cant shift out of park, but with my key i can unlock it,,what is the problem? i hate having to unlock the gear with my car keys everytime i need to drive.

the anty theft is not working right thats the part that locks the gear shift into park, you have two ways of sorting this out,
1 get the anty theft fixed
2 remove the anty theft from the gear shift,
