Standard transmission will not go into gear!

Can not get the car to go into gear in 1st thru reverse. To get the car in gear you have to shut off car then put it in gear. What would the problem be and how difficult would it be to fix it myself?

Does that have a hydraulic clutch pedal or is it mechanical. If you don't know if you pump the clutch pedal about 10 times and you feel it getting harder and you can then put it into gear its hydraulic.Check under the hood on the drives side by the brake reservoir and you should see a little like see through little reservoir with a black cap or rubber cap..Pop that of and see if that is full.If its not than you have a leak in the hose that goes down to the slave cylinder or the slave cylinder is bad..You can look in front of the trans at the bottom as maybe see the leak if one..You can put some brake fluid in that little reservoir.Fill it up the pump your clutch pedal a few times to see if that helps putting into gear while car is running. If all that checks out.Your more than likely going to ned a clutch installed...

2003 hyundai elantra standard, while in reverse my car moves a few feet than front tires lock up, car acts like i put it in 1st gear. When in 1st car shakes and doesnt want to move

There is an internal transmission failure. Recommend taking the vehicle by tow truck to a trusted transmission specialty repair facility.

TRANSMISSION

Fuse # 20 or 21 gets power through ignition. This fuse controls PRNDL indicator, speedometer, tach, & will cause transmission to not shift gears correctly. Ours took off in 3rd gear when put in Overdrive & only ran in 3rd gear. If we tried to manually shift thru gears (auto trans), it had 1st, 3rd, reverse. No 2nd or over drive. Replaced ignition. Fixed problem. Root problem was Electric motor that engaged 4 wheel low side was bad. Every time we used 4 Low side it threw power surge through ignition & blew ignition out. Good Luck.

Buick rendezvous gear shifts just fine but car won't move. No grinding shifting is smooth and flawless vehicle just will not move forward whether it is in drive, 1st, 2nd, or third gear. Reverses and

Sounds as if forward driving gears are shot. Different gears make vehicle move in reverse. I would ask if transmission fluid level when checked is in the operation range or full.

I have a 93 Toyota pick up 4x4 standard transmission. Sometimes when I go to reverse, there is a grinding noise, which won't let me shift into reverse. I then need to turn off the vehicle, then engage....

Could be the clutch.
Reverse and first do not have gears that line up like the others do. So if the clutch is not disengaging all the way, they will grind.

2003 chevrolet cavalier, manual transmission lost 2nd, 4th and reverse but still has 1st, 3rd and 5th gears.

Sounds like one of the levers inside the transmission is either broken or otherwise disengaged. Remove the shifter to see if you can see any obvious reason.

Whining noise when engaging 1st or reverse.

i had a nissan pickup that would whine in all gears except 4th...it started out with 1st then reverse then went to the rest...solution was new transmission...or rebuild cause the syncronizers or the gears them selves are being chewed up...the new transmission was cheaper then a rebuild. or take it to somewhere that will do free diag on the transmission.

Transmission

Transmission model is 4L60E,and the symptoms you are describing is a common failure on these transmissions all the way back to it's predecesor, the 700 R 4 model. The reverse input shell, splines into the low/reverse planetary sun gear. The reverse input shell has a collar with splines made into it,and these splines are prone to stripping, and sometimes the collar itself will break free from the shell.Without the shell functioning,no reverse, and this is likely what you are hearing.Aftermarket companies sell heavy duty, and standard duty, replacements.Eventually, you will lose the forward gears also.Good luck.
