I've replaced the pads but cannot push the piston in the caliper back far enough to put the caliper back over the brake pads.
Use a pair of pliers.put each side of the jaws of the pliers in one of the V-grooves of the piston and turn clockwise whle pushing it in
In this gm car, in this particular year, u don't push the piston in using a c-clamp. gm makes a specialty tool that, "screws" the piston back in. i no, its dumb, but the way to tell if your car needs this tool or not is simple. if the piston is round with out any notches in the metal, use a c-clamp. but, if u have a notch in the top and bottom, your fucked. have fun!
Use a c clamp to push it in
There is a special tool for this which allows you to turn the piston while pushing it back into the caliper. Or as someone said, you can use pliers that fit into the grooves on the piston, but it may be tough.
You absolutely cannot just push it back with a c-clamp without turning it.

what are you using to push the piston in with? I had a similar problem trying to use a C-clamp then got a loaner brake "special tool" kit from Advance Auto (most parts stores have loaner tools) that had a clamp in the kit that worked much better.
I have the tool to move the piston back its after i bleed them the pressure wont release why
the deal with recompressing this piston is that it threads back in...I broke a Cclamp trying to get it back in. I ended up using a pair of needle nose plyers to twist it back into place...
