My 1991 sedan deville's coolant temp light came on, i let off the gas for a while and it went off although a while later the stop engine temp light came on, there was no water in the overfill tank but wen i turned the motor back on slightly after the stop engine light all the water shot back into the overfill tank. what could this be?

so fill it up with coolant/water and let it run? for how long

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

I suggested pressure testing the cooling system with a hand pumped pressure tester , after filling the cooling sys, not with the engine running, Sorry if there was a misunderstanding.

You have to pressure test the cooling system with the engine off. While under pressure any leak can be seen

sounds like this car is overheating. As to why, there can be a multitude of answers. Only way to truly find out, is fill the cooling system up to full, and pressure test cooling system.

What is the safe coolant temp in a 1989 Cadillac Eldorado

225-230 deg F is what the Caddy forum says. 250 F can be tolerated briefly when towing, going up a mountain etc.

1996 Cadillac Sedan Deville that overheats only when idling

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line(small hose). The purge line is designed to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank (not the cap) ,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.
If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.
The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side close to the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.

Mild heat from floor when temperature is set at 90 degrees

Hi Paul,
I doubt it is the heater core although it could be, I bet if you replace the thermostat it will allow the coolant to get at little hotter and the heater will be warmer.
Let me know if this helps and please rate this solution. Lone99star
