1999 chevy s10 not starting

I have a brand new battery and i had the starter tested and it passed the test. what else could the problem be? i had a little bit of corrosion on the positive battery cable but it wasnt enought to cause this plus i cleaned it off. spark plugs need changing but their not bad enough to not cause a spark

i just cut the installation off down about six inches on the cables and theres no corrosion anywhere in sight except for what was on there orignally

    Does it crank over?

Does it NOT crank but just make a clicking sound?

Does it do nothing when trying to start?

Have you checked the starter shims? May not be it but its worth a shot.

If thats not it, and like you said the starter tested good and the solenoid is obviously working if the starter works for a split second, then like Ljdawg7 said I would suggest the cables. Even if there is no corrosion the cable could still be bad and visually look good. The positive is usually the cable that corrodes the most but if they were both pretty well off I would probably go head and do the pair.

Hope this helps.

  • change both cables! some times when you clean the corrosion off the cables some times you cant clean all the cables don't always help the corrosion build up in the cables!!

I need help with my chevy s10 2000

sounds like bad battery, also check for parasitic drains on electrical system. Batteries usually start going bad in summer or warm months and when it is colder there is a larger draw on battery current.

How do i get to 91 chevy s10 starter?new battery, alt. will only start with jump most of the time had problems in summer here in las vegas, nevada. getting a lot of different opinions. just would like to...

Yhea they can be a tight fit, really tight if its 4x4!
Your local parts store should be able to test the starter while it still on the truck. You can hook up the vat machine and run a starter drain test! Make sure the cables are tight and clean before you go too far. A jump start being needed usally means that the battery or the cables are bad.
Make sure they test the battery when they test the starter!

1996 chevy lumina sedan, not van

Dan , check the wiring harness where it droops down on the pass side near the radiator. the wiring always gets corroded here and all kinds of things can happen. open up the harness and check the wiring. repair the obvious wires and then tug the rest of them. also check the fusebox in the engine compartment for corrosion and poor connections to the relays. there are two grounds on the front of the engineand most importantly one major ground on the lowest tarnsmission bell housing bolt/stud
near the starter. all of these were common with these vans.
also chech the fusable links at the starter-baisically pull on any suspicious looking wires you see might be corroded or have a "BUMP" in them wich is usally a ball of corrosion.
good luck, wish i was there to help
