I just bought a 88 reliant today and when test driving it i noticed the temperature gage would fluctuate based on my foot pressure to the gas pedal. what is that all about? should i be worried about a cracked or leaking head gasket? ugh

Yes reliants while a good car did have some problems with head gaskets. and this would be an indication of a head gasket problem check the oil is there water in it the oil will look milky. is there any oil in the coolant? is the car blowing a lot of white smoke all of these symptoms can be indicators of a blown head gasket.
the fluctuation in the temperature could also be a bad water pump is the vehicle getting good flow through the coolant system?
hope this helps

Sounds like u have a leaking head gasket, the more power u apply the quicker it leaks as the pressure goes up in the combustion chamber, this puts combustion gases into the cooling system and makes the engine run hot, gas does not cool the engine..

2004 chevy cavalier wi'll not start unless I keep my foot on gas. Then it will start but won't stay running until it warms up. While driving it runs fine untill you brare then it stalls out.

Pressing the pedal down, puts in clear flood mode. Any applicable trouble codes? Did you use a gage and check correct fuel pressure, also, see if pressure will hold for a bit, with everything off. If it drops like a rock you have fuel leak. Pull vac line off fuel pressure regulator, where applicable, if fuel runs out, you have a faulty fuel pressure regulator. You could have fuel injector leak?
Smell of your crankcase oil dipstick, if it smells like gas, either you don't change your oil and filter very often or fuel leak. There could be other issues? You have to start testing, somewhere.

If you notice the car running rich(black smoke out of the exhaust) you might look at the MAP sensor. It is a common problem with these cars, and about 50 bucks at your local parts store. You will find it on the passenger side inner fender just in front of the strut tower, it is a small black box with one vaccum line and one elec. plug. try pulling off the vac. line and plugging it with a bolt the car should idle like that, if it does, you have found your problem. Hope this helps

check the fuel pump fuse/relay, could be just bad enough to cause an intermittent start/no start. and check fuel pressure, spark and the crank position sensor.

Car wont start

when you press the brake pedal the brake master cylinder vacuum booster takes vacuum away from the engine and that slows the idle speed just enough to trigger the low pressure oil light. Pull the oil pressure sending unit out and hook up an oil pressure test gage, if the pressure is above 15 PSI hot engine idle in drive replace the oil pressure sending unit.
