Sounds like the torque converter is not disengaging you might need a TCC switch (torque converter clutch)

I have a 1996 5.2 dodge ram 1500. All of my wires need to be placed on the distributor cap. Where do I start with number 1 ion the distributor cap

bought a dead car or made it dead doing this job?
does not matter all , just new wires.
replace them 1 by 1 ,never more at once.
or OOPS?
or did all wrong and need what to do now
well, put the engine crank pulley at #1 firing
on compression stoke, not exhaust stroke, valves both CLOSED
and BINGO rotor points to #1 wire.
then rotor direction
and last lay the wires back down. (rotor must be at #1)
if confused by TDC learn there are 2 on clinder 1.
end of compression stroke
end of exhaust stroke (4 cycle engine it is)
next time mark #1 before pulling wires, mark cap #1
do not unclamp the DIZZY base bolt or lose timing.
52-undefined-undefined-0.jpg now the trick for true TDC 0degree mark.
there are many
  • valve cover left off both valves closed ,bingo
  • use compression gauge to find TDC<PSI high bingo
  • PSI 0 not
  • or the thumb pushing over spark hole #1
  • feel no pressure crank pulley turned CW fail
  • feel pressure now? bingo TDC about to happen
  • next time learn how to do it right. not be stuck in TDC H3LL. (not me have all the tools to find it)

I just bought a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 an it studers when go to accelerate also I have to manually shift through the gears to pick up an go but still don't go that fast only on the hi way

Has a tune up been done recently? If not may want to replace the plugs , wires, cap and ignition rotor. Also, find out if the previous owner had ever changed the fuel pump. The fuel filter is located on the the fuel pump assembly and can become clogged to create a lean fuel condition and make the engine sluggish.

YOU'RE GONNA HATE THIS BUT IT DOES SOUND LIKE A FUEL ISSUE. HOWEVER HERE'S THE CATCH.....THE FURL FILTER IS IN THE GAS TANK CONNECTED TO THE FUEL PUMP. YOU HAVE TO DROP THE TANK OR TAKE THE BED OFF TO GET TO IT. AND YOU CAN ONLY GET THE NEW FILTER AT THE DEALER. THE LOCAL PARTS STORE DOESN'T CARRY THESE. BUT I'M NOT SURE ABOUT NAPA, THEY MIGHT. YOU MIGHT ALSO WANT TO CHECK FOR A VAC. LEAK AROUND THE THROTTLE BODY. LASTLY WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU DID ANYTHING TO THE TRANS.? MIGHT WANT TO LOOK INTO THAT.
