How to wire up 1975 Ford Courier Alternator w/external regulator?

My farmall tractor has a mitsubishi alternator and external regulator from a 1975 Ford Courier pickup. It is not charging the battery. I have had the alternator tested and its good. I need a wiring diagram to wire up the circuit so my alternator will charge my battery.

Having trouble figuring out if i have an external or internal regulator on my 1988 f250 with a 460

Internally regulated Ford alternator will have a three wire plug and a single wire plug next to it. Plus the battery stud. The regulator is normally black or gray in color mounted on the back of alternator. The three wires plugs to the regulator. Externally regulated will not have these plugs. Hope this is helpful.

How can I replace alternator?

you may want to consider a little more troubleshooting before you just replace the alternator , the reason being the charge rate is controlled by a device called a voltage regulator , on most Chrysler and Gm vehicles this device is internal to the alternator , but in the ford case they are an external device , a 460 is an older engine size so im guessing this vehicle was made sometime in the 70's ?? if this is true , ive seen a ton of charging problems show up due to corrosion (rust) on the back of the voltage regulator (common rusting on 70 models) , as its critical this module is grounded clean/ tight and rust free to vehicle body or it will not work properly also if vehicle is made prior to 1975 then the regulator is adjustable (this is evidenced by the removable top on module ) so it might be that it only needs adjustment ?? , proper charging rates should be , engine at less than 650 rpms all accessory's full on (headlights, heaterblower, etc. ) battery should hold at 12 volts measured at battery , and a throttle up to over 1500 rpm to not exceed 14 volts measured at battery (13.8 volt) is factory setting but that's tough to see that fine

What would cause the alternator to run hot on a 1949 farmall cub tractor

Sounds like your still running power thru the original regulator also. Disconnect the original system completely so that your running power directly from alternator's inboard regulator and to the battery. Nowhere else.

New battery and new alt. but still doesn't charge 1999 f 150

check that the new alternator has the right type of regulator for it . If you have an internal regulated alternator on a car that has an external regulator then it will not charge . Both look the same but it may have int -reg on the housing some where.

Alternator not charging

If the alternators are not exactly the same as the original then there may be a problem with the voltage regulator circuit. Some alternators have internal regulators and others have external regulators.. Check for fuses in the charge circuit . If the battery is faulty then the alternators will not charge any way. Have a load test done on the battery.. If ok check the wiring circuit as the alternators require battery voltage before they will charge (no residual magnetism in an alternator)

Check charging system

Check and see if you have an external voltage regulator. A lot of ford products have an externally mounted regulator. If so, replace and repaired! Good luck

I have an 86 toyota pcickup battery charge light is on have good battery and replaced alternator twice.

i think you have an external voltage regulator in that year , ck that first . The easy way to tell if it has an external regulator ,if it has carburated it has an external regulator if its fuel-injected its internal regulator in side the alternator.Have you checked to see how much voltage the charging system is putting out at an idle ? It should be around 13.5 volts to 14.5 volts any less then 12.5 charge light won't go out.

Does the Galant have a external voltage regulator ? replaced the alternator and the car charged hard(18-25 amps) and then stopped. the battery had a full charge.

Doesn't have an external regulator, If battery is reasonably fully charged it doesn't need 25A + of a charge . Put on your rear window de-mister and headlights and check voltage before and during test !
Good Luck

How to jump terminals to test external voltage regulator. this is on an ford taurus with an external regulator. There are 4 terminals, I = indicator lamp. S = stator of alternator. A = alternator or B+ of...

Jump terminals A to F and the alternator should full field and charge. If it charges then replace the regulator. if it doesn't charge replace the alternator. I remember the terminals by thinking of the word AIR FORCE .
