Not too familiar with the hyundai brand vehicle but i can tell you what a harmonic balancer is and where it should be located. it is the large pulley located on the bottom of the engine it should have marks on it to indicate top dead center. it will have a rubber piece around the middle this is usually what goes with a balancer check this pulley for the rubber pushing out or missing check for metal filings on it.
also check to see if you have any idler pulleys these ar pulleys that bolt to the block the spin on a bearing that can go bad and will cause the problem that you are describing.
your alternator water pump and power steering pump can cause screeching sounds as well.

there is a mechanics tool that is a stethoscope it has a long rod that can be placed on the shafts of pulleys to hear where the noise is coming from. a good substitute for this is a long screwdrive (make sure it's long enough to be safe while the engine is running.) you can listen on the handle while the end is against the block or component that each pulley is on you will be able to hear the difference.
hope this helps some.

3.5l. What causes a noise under hood that sounds like bad rotors?

Hello. It seems that belt tensioner is either 'weak' or the serpentine belt is not turning 'true'. Also, if the harmonic balancer is NOT 'fully' seated on the crankshaft, the belt will turn not 'true'. Usually if the belt tensioner if not strong, it will make a 'squeaking' sound. Good luck and keep me informed; if you want to.

My crank pulley is loose on 2009 jeep Cherokee how do I tighten

There is one bolt in center of pulley/harmonic balancer. Sounds like the harmonic balancer has started going bad..if bolt in center of pulley is loose...which is fairly uncommon tighten which you just tighten Iike any other bolt. If it is tight then you will need the replacement. Replacement is a good bit more involved. Radiator has to be removed, special tool, harmonic balancer pulley remover is required..it will remove pulley. Then you line up pulley with keyway..tap on with rubber hammer until pulley is on far enough for bolt to be started..tighten the bolt and it pulls the pulley all the way into place.

What would cause my 2006 colo to just stop running while driving down the road

hope your engine is not deadm maybe the timing belt has jumped. DO NOT DRIVE VEHICLE UNTIL YOU HAVE ASCERTAINED WHETHER THIS IS A POSSIBILITY...IT COULD BE VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR IF THE BELT HAS JUMPED AND YOU ATTEMPT TO START/DRIVE THE VEHICLE

BEST OF LUCK

1988 Old Cutlass Ciera 3.8L noise under hood... all the time except when foot is pressing gas pedal down. When car shuts off it goes click clickclick click click (gets quieter). When serpentine belt off, I...

The balancer is bad, or it has come loose. There is a little metal wedge piece called a woodruff key that holds the balancer in place, and then the crankshaft center bolt keeps the balancer on tight.
There should be no wobble or movement at all of the harmonic balancer. Take it off, it may still be alright, but find out why the pulley moves on the crankshaft. Maybe the key is missing. This should not be an expensive repair-it's not a problem with the motor, just that balancer pulley.

Screechind and knocking sound when it is started

check the harmonic balancer for failure first The sound is probably the pulley slipping on the bonded rubber to the crank hub.

I had this problem on my 92 SSEI.
Was the Harmonic balancer for sure.
Damper rubber breaks away from pulley.
I had it rebuilt as I was told to stay with it,
it is matched to your crank.

Would a bad map sensor make the car not start?

No, it might make the engine run poorly, but not prevent starting. If you have neither fuel or spark, suspect the combination crankshaft/camshaft sensor located where the serpentine belt passes over the crankshaft pulley. Remove the belt and the harmonic balancer--the sensor is located just behind the balancer. It requires an alignment tool to place the sensor in proper position.
