I have a 2000 T&C, 3.8ltr with about 134,000 miles. The van has started stalling while driving. It doesn't matter if the engine is cold or warmed up, if it's rainy or sunny, or if it's a hot summer day or freezing out. We will be coasting along at highway speed and the rpm's just tank. No spuddering or signs indicating that anything is wrong. Sometimes we don't even notice that we've stalled (like if the radio is on) until we happen to see that the oil light and cruise light are on or the loss of powersteering. At that point we throw it in neutral and start it back up. It always starts back up with the exception of once or twice. Sometimes we can go for days or weeks with no issue and other times it's several times a day for weeks. Recently it will sometimes have a hard time starting while in park. It will start and instantly stall back out. We would then press the gas pedal while starting and let it rev for a few seconds and most of the time that gets it going.
It does throw a code and when I scanned it, it came up as misfire in cylinder #3. So I replaced all the plugs and wires, and cleared the code. After a few days it all started again and threw the same code (misfire in cyl 3). So I replaced all three coil packs (and the alternator). Still no luck. I decided to check online and seen similar stories with others spending hundreds of dollars at dealers with no luck. I'm hoping someone might have a suggestion. I'm hesitant to take it to a shop right now and possibly get a big run around that ends up costing big $$$ and still end up with a dangeruos vehicle stalling out. I could see the van running rough if cyl 3 was missfiring but not instantly stall out the engine. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Master hall effect sensor on the fly wheel is starting to go bad. It timies the rpms of the engine and times the firing of the spark plugs. The magnet or steel slug the sensor senses as the fly wheel rotates.past the hall effect electronic trigger is begining to fail intermittantly. There are some times two metal slugs to be sensed and the time between the two is used to time the engine. Used to be a coil in the distributor when the steel in the coil gets rusty it swells when it swells it will eventually break the fine wires in the coil and become intermettant just before complety failing. Your problem sounds similar. What ever senses the speed of the engine has to sense something rotating some where to time the engine. That sensor system is failing.
I am not shure...but i am guessing that there is a problem with the injector in that cylinder......
the tip of the sprayer is probably clogged!...
but i am not shure......
have you check the fuel filter...too?
or the fuel pump?
what about the oil pressure?
i hope this helps some...XD

I've run some injector cleaner through the gas tank a few times but that didn't change anything. The fuel filter was changed last summer so that should still be ok. I hadn't checked the fuel pump yet just because it seemed that the van should spudder as it used the last bit of fuel in the lines. Since it doesn't spudder before dieing I didn't figure to check it. It seems more like the ignition was all of a sudden shut off (or the key was turned so that the power is on but the engine is off). I can try and drive it around and scan it as I drive to read the stats and see if anything is off with the fuel or oil pressure. So far I haven't been lucky enough to have the van stall while driving it around with the scanner hooked up.
Thanks for the suggestions. Feel free to pass on any others you might think up. If I come accorss any new information I'll post an update.
