Problem with my 1987 Nissan Pickup

Why is my 1987 Nissan P/U backfiring?

  • tribefanz Mar 24, 2009

Engine....4 Cyl,,,,,Only had the truck for 3 months...Only thing I have done was the oil change....It has 149,000 miles. The backfiring,,,,,Always occurs after leave a light....I speed up and it backfires...And jumps....Acts like it will stall or not getting gas.

Dear tribefanz: first I need to know which engine you have, there were several used in that truck. I need more details as to when the backfiring occurs? I need a little history on the maintenance, which would be helpful in formulating an opinion. BE HONEST about your maintenance report. If you have done little and you have a lot of miles, so be it. But if you don't give the right input you won't get the right output. mybunkey is your road to the truth and the guide to no more bang, but I NEED INPUT!

TIMING OR BURNT VALVE! COULD ALSO BE WATER IN GAS , TRY A BOTTLE OF HEET SOLD AT AUTOZONE AND ADD TO YOUR NEXT FILL UP. ALSO RUN A TANK OF PREMIUM UNLEADED THROUGH IT FOR A GOOD OCTANE BOOST TO HELP WITH THE BURNING OF THE WATER FROM YOUR TANK. HOPE THIS HELPS!

Truck starts and idles a little rough but when any throttle is applied it backfires and dies. any ideas

here are a few things that will cause a backfire, egr system not working properly, vacuum leak around manifold or hoses, damaged valve springs or sticking valves, check the egr valve for carbon build up in passage way, where it mounts to engine.

1993 nissan pickup 2.4 liter back firing just rebuilt engine timing isnt 180 out distibuter isnt 180 out blowing embers out tailpipe and exhaust flutters

Loosen the valves up and reset valve clearance and since it is blowing out the exhaust there is 3 things it can be, timing belt, or chain or valves to tight or distrbutor is off. My guess is you put the chain on and it slipped 3 or 4 teeth and is backfireing threw the exhaust. If you need more help post here and I will help.

Bogs and backfires

What have you done so far? Does your van have electronic ignition or points? If the latter i'd check/replace points, capacitor & white, low tension wire inside distributor. Also check the spark plugs (all four should have the same grey/brown colour) & H.T. lead resistance, especially if the fault occurs under load/acceleration.
