A few days ago I try to drop the top of my convertible and it pauses half way, around the point when the back should open up to allow the roof to crawl into, and a red light starts flashing near the button which allows me to drop the top. First, the compartment that opens up to allow the top to crawl into was about an inch off of where it would be if closed, and wouldn't lock into place when I pushed on it or the button to close it. I tried opening my trunk, but had to pull hard, scratching where the trunk and the back of that compartment meet. My battery then died sometime along that point. I opened the trunk, jump the car, then find the canister that holds the hydraulic fluid (I don't know how to check the fluid by the way -__-). In attempt to somehow manually close the top, I unlatched it and popped (what I assume was the gear to allow the top to move) out then back in. I press the button to close it, and get nothing but the running motor noise. I then popped my back seats off to pull on the lever underneath the back seat on the drivers side, stretching the 2 wires attaching from it to the trunk, about 2 extra inches longer then they were before i pulled it. The handle won't go back into the original place that it started, as I believe i pulled the wires too hard or something. I then pushed the button to close the top, and it slowly did as I guided it with my hand and latched in on the drivers side, yet the passenger side is about 2 inches in the air and acted like it latched in, yet in the air, and will not budge. After that happened, I try to press the button and nothing happens, not even the sound of the motor attempting to work, as it did before I tried to manually close the top. Now my trunk won't open as it makes what sounds to be a faint dead battery clicking noise as i try to turn the key to the left. The doors don't lock or unlock as they used to when turning the key in the hole of the trunk, I just get that clicking noise. I hope I was descriptive enough lol. PLEASE help me, thank you!

Hi Stan
First of all the roof is not even soppose to operate while the trunk is open - So there is the first problem Ive been involved with BMW's for a long time and this is the first Ive heard of a roof opening while the trunk is open. There is a built in feature that tells the car not to open the roof if the trunk is open and the other way roung while the roog lid is open the trunk cant open.
The reason the roof is not working anymore as soon as there is stress on the roof the electric motors(One operates the roof and the other operates the roof lid) disengages, You said that the roof still worked but the lid did not so probably only the one motor disengaged. So what you have to do is open the trunk on the left hand side right behind the tail light pull away the material and simply just push the electric motor into place. that should fix your problem.
It may happen that the two motors have become out of sync, Disengage both electric motors manualy put the roof away engage the motors and that should put the roof and lid back into sync.

Sounds like the sensor has faulted or the pump has become disengaged. Usually when the light is flashing it's a sensor. You can check for a pinched line or low fluid also. There is a manual lock overide procedure to get the windows up, it's in you owners manual.
Good luck...i hope this helps,

Its an electric roof? yes. sounds like the hydrolic motor needs bleeding should be in the boot. uou will need some power steering fluid.
if you can still here the motor then that should be ok, make sure there is nothing stopping the roof from moving freely in the back etc.
The motors are quite robust on these cars but it might be on its way out.

I just had the same problem. There is a hydraulic fluid reservoir in the trunk on the left wheel well. It should be filled to the little dot inside a circle on the tank. If not, turn the T-handle on the motor, just above the reservoir, counterclockwise. Unscrew the plug with an allen wrench and fill to appropriate level with hydraulic fluid. Replace cap and then turn T-handle clockwise and secure tightly. If tank was completely empty, it will take a few lifts back and forth of the top with button to build up good pressure. Thank goodness it is a cheap and easy fix. Its kind of difficult to get the fluid in the little hole though. I used a small turkey baster.

the trunk will not open because the rear deck lid is not latched.if you have someone push down on the rear lid the micro switch contact will close and then the trunk should be able to be opened
