2000 Mercury Sable Logo

I have a 2000 mercury sable and after a fill up one day the car started idling rough especially when I was stopped at a stoplight, etc.. thought I had bad gas...added water remover....well apparently that is not it. I also added fuel injector cleaner. The car exhilarates by itself, my rpm tack races up and down, eating gas like crazy, cant idle in drive without dying, when I approach a stop I put car in neutral so it wont die. Now as of last nite it is making noises...never seen a car exhilarate on its own without foot on gas????

SOURCE: rough idle

Mercury had a recall on 3.0 duratech motors in 2000 and 2001. If you get a fuel smell at startup then you might have a bad lower intake gasket, it could cause a miss if seal is cracked. Article No. 01-4-3 you can get it on AllData.

Also, check the PC rubber L piece that runs from the PVC valve to under the throttle control - it could be busted.

Make sure ignition wires are not cracked. If you haven't tuned it up in over 30-40K consider doing that.

SOURCE: 1989 Mercury Sable GS 3.0L runs rough and idles down and stalls

Sounds like you might have a stuck open EGR valve. Is the check engine light on. I would replace the fuel filter if it hasn't been replaced, also check the air filter.

If it runs better at times, then it sounds like a sensor. The ECT could be bad, it can cause idling and power issues. If the check engine light is flashing, then that can also be researched...blueamber...I've owned 6 of these capris so far

2001 Mercury Sable - already asked but this is in better detail???

Not plugs. Go to AutoZone, Advance, or Oreilys autoparts for a FREE scan. Bring pen and paper and write down trouble Code that their scanner shows. Clerk should be able to tell you, but you want the Code so your can price repair.
Once you get Codes you can call and price work. A few can be done without much effort. Unfortunately the ABS may be a victim of heavy braking. The ABS can be checked with a better scanner(Not all are equal).
Try tightening the gascap, although each time you added fuel additives you did that, know that one Code may be related to a loose cap.
Think back about your gas purchase. The cheapest is E85. If you put this in your car, it is not made for it. If this is what happened, then it will give a Mechanic a better idea of everything broken.

My 97 mercury sable 3.0 is very hard to start once started runs really rough for a second then smooths out

My first guess would be a dirty throttle body or a faulty idle air control valve.
Also one of the injectors could be leaking fuel into the cylinder when you stop the engine.
Is the check engine light on when the engine is running ?

Rough idling can be caused be `ye olde vacuume leake'.HaHa!
So check for THAT first.I have also seen those cars eat a set of spark plugs and wiring pretty fast, so remove a coupla' plugs(they're easy to get to if engine's cold)and check their condition. (:^) don-ohio

Idles rough when first starting in morning. plugs replaced, new throttle body, two new ignition coils. After a few minutes rough idle goes away. Sometimes causes check engine light to go on. Not consistent...

Sounds like you might have a bad engine coolant temperature sensor. I would have the codes retrieved from the computer to see what sensor/s it is seeing a problem with.
