This definitely sounds like a wheel bearing going out, or possibly the rear brake shoes/pads are worn out. Either way you will have to take the wheels off to determine the cause of the noise. Changing the wheel bearing or brake shoes/pads is not that difficult of a job and with the right instructions, you will be back on the road in no time. For detailed information on changing the wheel bearing, please go here. If it turns out to be a break shoe/pad, then please go here for detailed instructions on changing brake pads/shoes.

if it is a rear wheel bearing the driver won't hear it as much as a front wheel bearing.
If the bearing seizes at speed in the rear of the car you can damage the rear axle . I have seen the damage done when at my mechanics on someone else's car that was in for repair.
If it is a front wheel and it seizes you will crash as your car veers to one side. It takes a while for a wheel to seize but the longer you drive on a worn bearing the more risk you take of this occurring.
does the noise vary with different speeds ?
how are the tyres are they worn on the inside edges ?
how are the tyre pressures are they pumped up correctly to 32 psi ?

Symptoms of rear wheel bearing failure on a 1999?

Jack up the rear of the car and try wiggling the wheels. They should be fairly tight.

I am getting a very loud rythmic grinding from rear end. I think its the wheel hub. Is this expensive? Can I change this myself?

both parts will be cheap from brake pads to wheel bearing if need to replace. 50 bucks for sets of brake pad and wheel bearing will be 27 bucks. rear grinding could be your brake pads are worned and rubbing against the rotor. you can do the work your self and don't need a shop as long you have the right tools. if its the wheel bearing than its going to be other task, which still can perform the work at home. Big 1/2 inch sockets sets with box and open end wrench will come in handy. if it the rear end it will be best to take it to professional to have the work done.

2001 and 2002 jeep grand cherokee. while making hard left hand turn experience rumbling sound doesnt happen when driving straight or right turns. Cant decide if sound is from front or rear area

Try checking the bearing in the left wheel if the rumbling is on the left side. Sometimes bearings can be worn down and sometimes may even twist or bend.

I need a free diagram of rear wheel bearing replacement

The question you asked me to clarify was really quite simple..... I needed a diagram of rear wheel bearing assembly for a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.38 litre, 6 cylinder, 2 wheel drive vehicle. You couldn't provide me with a diagram so I took the wheel off looked at the old one then the new one and just did it myself. Thanks for not helping.

Replacing a rear wheel bearing Hub on a 2001 celica 190?

I had this same problem myself. The hub is a sealed unit and must be purchased as a whole assembly to the tune of around $400 from Toyota. Long story short I never replaced my hub. The problem turned out to be tires that were worn out. I figured that out when i rotated the tires and the sound moved to the front of the car... Go figure. Replaced the tires and all the noise went away.
