I previously posted a problem with my 89 Firebird 2.8l. I had an alternator go bad and replaced it after Auto Zone told me it was good after 9 tests. then i got someone who knows how to run the machine and it failed. Now two weeks later the alternator went bad again. I do not know what can be the cause. all connections and wiring is good. I took all of my bulbs out of the lights in the car (inside). I cannot figure it out. The only thing is my headlight switch sometimes sticks and leaves the lights open. But I wouldn't think that it would kill the alternator. Any ideas??????
Dude i tell you right now you problem is in where you get your alt from
take it back to auto zone get your money back after having these defect units. go to napa pep boys or advanced. get one of there alternators, and have them put it on there tester make sure it is putting out at least 12.35 volts minimum, it will probably be around 14. to 16. volts have battery charged before starting. after starting the car put voltmeter to back alternator elec. post once again. as long as your voltmeter reads above 13.25 volt you are good. hope this helps the situation
shack
Ok the problem consists of your battery..........you have to have a full charge on the battery when you put a new alternator on or you burn out the regulator inside the alternator.....hope this helps!
are you sure it is fully charged..........it has to have a minimum of 12 volts or it will fry the alternator
where did you buy alternator from?what all started this situation?
ok i have had the same problem with auto zones alternator's...........i own a 85 tans am and the alternator did the same thing i finally took auto zones back got my $$$ back and went to advance auto parts and havent had a problem since.....auto zones alternators are reman's they dont replace the regulators on the inside of the alternators when they rebuild them.....advance's are either completly rebuilt or 100% brand new..........try that and see what happens

I have a brand new battery. That is what i replaced first.
Yeah threw it on a charger before it put new alternator in.
The alternator went bad and I went to Auto zone to have it tested. The person tested it said it was good. I went back 2 more times to have them test it. Still said it was good. I had gone through all the wires to and from battery, alternator, starter, removed all bulbs from all inside lights. Still didn't work. Went back found someone who could actually run the machine. Alternator failed. bought new one from them. Charged the battery reinstalled it and the alternator. Car ran fine for just about two weeks. Now it is doing the same thing all over again.
Cool i'll try that. thanks for your help
