I replaced the drum brakes on my 1997 cavalier and when I drove it around the block the brakes were rubbing extremely bad causing a lot of drag and when I got back the drums were extremely hot is it dangerous to keep driving the car like this or should I not drive it and does anyone know how to fix this problem
Yes it is dangerous but an easy fix. common mistake when doing drum brakes is an improper adjustment or faulty part the brake adjuster is installed incorrectly or the brake wheel cylinder is not releasing do both sides of the wheel cylinder press in if not replace check the E brake for proper adjustment as well as some have self tensioner and would need to be backed off for new shoes

Bad PROPORTION VALVE ... the back brakes should only be doing 30% of the stopping with a bad proportion valve it will send more pressure to the back during braking and cause it to lock up. Good Luck and thanks for using FIX YA

Hi
I am sure there are 2 holes between the studs that are threaded, and you can screw a bolt in to each of these, to ease off the drum.
If this fails, a little heat from a gas blow torch, and tapping with a hammer should do the trick.
Before refitting, the give hub flange, and centre hole edge a rub with emery paper, and put on a slight smear of copperslip grease on the drum hole edge, to prevent same happening next time !
Good Luck
Don´t forget to give me a rating if I helped please !
John.

I fix my own 1998 cavalier. before I had the same problem. mechanics made me changed catalyte converter, combustion gaskets, EGR, fuel injectors with a tune up on spark plugs and boots... BUT the problem was still there. they all gave up and told me to trash the dang thing but I kept it. did research and studies, lots. finally found out the car was design without a regular pcv valve. **There is a thing called an air/oil separator on it. Its mounted on the block of the engine just right above of the oil filter. You must clean out the tubes. The one that usually gets clogged by oil slug would be the one connected to the oil. runs smooth like a baby after you get that clean. hope this helps.
