Hello. I have a '89 Ford Tempo GL (manual transmission) that keeps shutting off in mid-drive. When it dies, sometimes I'm able to turn it back on with the key, other times not; sometimes it restarts with compression ignition while moving. It doesn't happen on a regular basis either, making it hard to find the source of the issue. I've already replaced the battery, the computer module, the key switch, and the switch/communicator interrupter. It's also had it's fuel pump replaced and received a tune-up recently. I'm really at a loss as to what to look into next. If you know of anything that could be the problem, please tell me. -Jacob

How is the car when put in drive? Does it almost stall or does it run fine? Almost sounds like a transmission problem. Reverse and drive put the same exact load on the engine when sitting still, so it seems unlikely it could be anything but a transmission problem. Maybe the transmission range switch is out of adjustment or bad.

First thing you need to do is when it stalls out, determine what it's not getting (fuel or spark) then once that's been isolated you can do some testing to determine why. If emissions system isn't working properly it can influence running...check and find that problem as well.

check to see if there is exaust coming out of the exaust pipe. It sounds like you might have a stopped up catalitic converter.

i had many problems with what i thought was my starter/ignition and replaced my alternator and battery. tho they were helpful, ultimately the problem was a small fusible link that had needed to be replaced, as it was over heating and when it would it would stop whatever electrical signal was imperitive to the car actually running. if i was driving and the wire over heated, it would stop running right on the road. i just used some 12 AWG stranded wire and it stopped stalling.i discovered it by accident when i touched the wire and noticed it was excessively hot and worn down. it was located in the upper right hand corner under the hood, where there are 3 wires, brown and black.

Check the coil for a white ash look any where on the coil. This is an indication that there is a crack in the case and its firing thru it. this can cause that problem. one other is the pick up coil in the distributor. these will not show anything. theres no way to check because when they are cool, they will test fine, but when there hot they just die. when they cool down , they work again

The fuel filter was changed not too long ago, and out of the gauges that I have (speed, RPM, temp., and fuel) everything seems fine. Could it be a problem with the coil or pick-up coil?
