Serpentine Tensioner for 2000 Ford Escort ZX2

I need to know the location of the tensioner. Also, I need to know how to loosen it to get slack in the belt so I can remove the alternator (as in which direction to turn the bolt). I am also replacing the belt along with the alternator. If you could tell me what size socket or wrench to use to loosen the tensioner that would be great as well.
As soon as I can release the tension It will be such a breeze.

    Hey thanks for your help!

Autozone's online material is too vague.

I went down to my local library and they have access to all of Chilton's/haynes repair manuals...ONLINE!!

Once I saw a diagram of the Sepentine belt and the location of it's pulleys it was a breeze!

Normally you can take a 1/2inch breaker bar and insert it in the hole on the tensioner pull down and take the belt off the alternator and also try autozone.com to see if they have your car listed for diagrams pictures and step by step instructions if your car is not listed then try your local library they have all the car manuals and even copy them for you

How do you loosen the tensioner on a 2002 ford zx2 escort

most are spring loaded and require use of a prybar or long big flatblade screwdriver.. some use a socket wrenck with a breaker bar and once tension is off the belt can be removed rather easily unless its behind other belts like the ac belt or power steering which need removed first..

Cannot find belt tensioner on 2001 ford escort

  • Locate the serpentine belt tensioner on the front of the engine. The belt tensioner on the 2001 Ford Escort is located directly under the power steering pump and above the air conditioner pump. The belt tensioner has a 17 mm bolt head in the center of the pulley.

How to replace a zx2 serpentine belt

Click on the following free direct Link. It has the correct Serpentine/Drive Belt Diagrams for your 1998 Ford Escort ZX2, 2.0L DOHC In-Line 4-Cylinder Engine.
The Link says 2000 for the Year, however this is the same as the 1998 Year Model.

    http://www.2carpros.com/car_repair_information/year/2000/make/ford/model/zx2/2000_ford_zx2_drive_belt_routing_diagram.htm

    "HOW TO":
Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
    1. Find the Tensioner(s). (See Diagrams on Link)
    2. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (on the Pulley or Arm Base) OR the OPENING (3/8ths or 1/2 inch square opening) rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
    3. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
    4. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
    a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
    b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
    c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
    d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
    e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them.

Need 2001 ford escort zx2 DOHC engine information, belt diagrams

The tensioner is between the a/c compressor and crank pulley, below the power steering pump. Use a 13 mm wrench to 'tighten' the bolt in the center of the pulley and it'll move to release tension off the belt.

    Serpentine belt replacement

    2.0L Engines
    See Figures 11, 12 and 13
The accessory drive belt for 2.0L engines has no provision for manual belt adjustment, since these engines use an automatic belt tensioner. Drive belt slack is taken up by the automatic tensioner.
Movement of the automatic tensioner assembly during engine operation is not a sign of a malfunctioning tensioner. This movement is the tensioner self-adjusting and is required to maintain constant belt tension.
The belt tensioner has a belt length indicator. If the indicator marks are not between the MIN and MAX marks, the belt must be replaced.
