How to open tail gate on 2004 hyundai when latch wont work my hundai santa fe latch handle seems to not work and i cant i open the tail gate how do i get at the mechanism?

There is a fuel shut off switch by the brake master cylinder that may have popped during the accident. it has a rubber top and is round in shape. push on the top of it and if it clicks it reset

Sounds like a linkage problem with the release handle, or the power(or manual if that is the case) lock mechanism. This will require removing the inner panel from the hatch, and seeing what is not working.To give you fair warning, these are not designed to come off with the hatch closed and can be a real bear. If you are not comfortable atempting this, may be better left to a pro. If you are, get back to me with any questions during disassembly, and I will be happy to try and help. Have access to factory diagrans if neccessary.Sorry my reply took so long, just not used to the new format yet!

the lock has 3 positions turn left,self centre,turn right,one of which is to lock the back door independantly of the central locking...

dear friend:it seem impossible but you can get the back panel of while the door is still close,then work your way to the lock and open,mabe the link just came out the handle

Hi;The latch/ouside handle is held on by four bolts on the inside of tailgat. Remove the four bolts and the handle should come clear so you can see the mechanism. Your on you own now.
