My 99 Jetta won't start.

It was perfectly fine this morning, and then after letting it sit for about 30 minutes I came out and it wouldn't start. At first I thought it had a dead battery, someone tried to jump me off but it didn't work. My lights, radio, and everything came on so i new it wasn't a dead battery. When i turn my key all the way over I can hear the fuel pump, but it doesn't even try to start. I tried tapping on the starter but it didn't do anything. I had to have to towed home. Any Ideas? Suggestions? Please help.

This procedure usually works:
·Check the battery cable connections:
Make sure the negative cable makes a good ground connection at the battery and (preferably) at the engine. Make sure the positive cable, makes a good connection at the battery and at the starter.

·Check the battery the simple way, like this:
Turn on the headlights, then try to start the car.If the headlights do not dim or go out, then the battery is likely ok.

·Check the starter and solenoid:
If the wiring looks ok, then look at the starter solenoid for a good connection, and proper voltage at the starter(10 volts minimum while cranking).
If the starter spins and no crank, the problem is most likely the Solenoid's pinion gear is stuck.
Have someone hit (not too hard) the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging a stuck pinion gear.
·Make a simple test of the alternator:
If you can, somehow get the engine running, measure the voltage at the battery. It should be at least 13.6 volts to properly charge the battery.

I heard there was a recall for this and the dealrship should change your brake light switch free of charge, give them a call.

Gluck!

SOURCE: 2000 Jetta Radio is dead after a dead battery jump start

Some German cars have anti-theft device inside to make it useless to steal...check at the dealership to see if jumping the battery will activate this(the car thinks its being stolen) .

SOURCE: Hi, when I went to

The key hub is composed on an key mechanism (that also commands the Neiman - the steering lock) and an electrical switch with several (in your case 4) contacts.
From what you describe it appears that the metal pin contact for the starter motor from the switch has broken (shorting the other contacts in the process) and has blocked the key mechanism. Just replace the key switch with a new one like

If necessary also get a new mechanism

Did not accelerate, but not it does.

If there is a check engen light on go to auto zone or O'Reilly's they will check it for free. Could be fuel pump going bad. Could be crank shaft sensor. Or a couple other things new cars are kinda a pane.

I have a 2001 Chevy Malibu 3.1 Liter. I was driving it last night, and I parked it, everything was fine. 15 minutes later I had to go somewhere, went to fire her up, and it wouldn't start. It's...

Assuming there's enough fuel in the tank - If the fuel filter is extremely clogged - try starting with the fuel cap off so it won't have work against the vacuum in the fuel tank. Fuel caps have breather holes which can be clogged also. The holes release the vacuum in the tank slowly. If it starts ok then, the problem sits in fuel supply - for example the fuel filter.

Smell the exhaust pipe - if it smells strongly like petrol, most likely it's the ignition system requiring service. (sparkplugs, distributer, sparklines)
