I can move the shifter out of park and move through all the gears but nothing will happen.Tried to roll the car but won't move 1996 ford thunder bird,V-6 engine
If it's not making horrible washing machine noises, it sounds like it's low on fluid. Make sure the ATF is in the operating range with it running in Park.
Howdy Ken!
At this point, one of two things must have happened:
1) The transmission has retired for good!
2) The linkage between your shift lever and the transmission is in need of repair, or is unhooked somehow.
Here's what you need to decide: Can I trace, locate, and repair this problem myself without tearing up my interior, or damaging parts??? If the answer is no, it's time to tow the lorry to a shop. If you want to go further tracing this problem, Ken, write back, and I'll give you an outline of how to tackle the diagnosis. Hope this helps. Thanks for your posts, watching for more.
Later, TaterTodd
Ok, let's trade a few quick posts, then. I'll try to pay better attention for a few minutes. Let me ask you some questions.
After you go thru the motion of shifting into drive, and bring the motor revs up, do you get any reaction, movement, noise or other response from the car??????? awaiting your answer, Todd
If you've got the console off around the shifter and up to the dash, tell me if you see a pair of cables running from the shifter, or is it just plugging on through the floor toward the underneath?
Also get the car up higher if you can't find problem in the interior or if dismantling the interior has you put off for the moment. I'll try to see if I can find you an actual drawing and send you the link in the meantime. You are on the right track looking at the shifter linkage.
Also, Is it super cold where you live today???????
Ken, The fact that you can't feel any detents when you move shifter, the car won't roll, and all you've told me, that it is still in park. You shifter linkage is somehow to blame. Let me know if I can help. Good luck! Todd

Checked the fluid, was a little low,not quite half a quart, added to full line while was running, and it still doing as was before. Thanks for previous info and any additional would be greately appreciated,Ken
Thanks for the return info. I got the car up as high as I could(got a small two and half ton floor jack) and put stands under it. I can't see to far under the car,but I can feel and partly see the cable and it's still hooked on the side of the tranny.Started to take out the console, got to the point where it's hooked on the dash under the radio and can't get it loose.Any more info would greatly be appreciated. The fluid doesn't smell burnt. Thanks again,Ken
The car won't make any kind of a sign that the tranny is doing anything but staying in park.Usually when going from park to reverse, you can feel it going into reverse.Shifter moves pretty easy through all the gears without catching in any of them.Usually ,push release button to go to reverse, then will go to neutral(can feel tranny release)go into drive, can feel tranny go into drive etc..Not doing any of that.Shifts really easy but not easy enough to fall from park to low, like something is unhooked. Thank you for all your help.Might not get back right away,in and out alot during the day. Thanks again,Ken.
