Your spark plugs provide the spark needed to get the petrol in your engine to burn. If a spark plug isn't working properly, it won't spark, so the fuel won't burn and the engine won't run properly. It will feel rough, you could lose power, have problems starting, etc.
For a 206 these should be changed roughly every 40,000 miles or 4 years, whichever comes first.
How you change them depends on your engine size, if you tell me I can give you the procedure. Or just take it to a garage, a new set of plugs cost around GBP16-24 depending which ones you buy, they shouldn't charge you much to fit them as it's a 15 minute job.
8 mm according to my Pugeot and Mercedes reference.
I would have a complete set of 3/8" Metrics 12 pt sockets on hand to be sure at the time of doing the job as sometimes our manuals are not exact due to the many variables.
It shows a thin walled 12 point metric. I know my BMW uses a 10MM thin walled for the irridium plugs.
You can find the tool mentioned on eBay, it has a special clip to retain the plug as you extract & insert it. Mercedes M156 engine, Peugeot 207 and 307, Renault 1.2 16v SPARK PLUG SOCKET 8MM Item #120884075060.
maintenance as in basic? Oil changes depend on the type of oil you use. General idea is about every 5000 miles, air filter and spark plug wires and spark plugs should be checked at 18k miles. not sure how long you've owned the car. The timing belt should be replaced at 100k miles, despite what your dealer says. Earliest at 80k miles.
The step by step instructions to replace spark plugs on the Peugeot 206 are as follows:- 1) Disconnect the battery by removing the positive connector. 2) Using a 10mm spanner or long socket remove the two studs with nuts attached on the coil pack which is located at the top back of the engine. Un-clip the hose that connects to the rocker case cover and air intake hose and move it aside. 3) Pull the coil pack out and move to aside the right. You may have to disconnect the plug adaptor, but you should be able to get away with leaving it to the right. 4) Using a suitable size spark plug socket and a flexi extension bar and rachet or tommy bar undo each socket and replace with an appropriate new spark plugs. 5) Reassemble exactly in reverse order of the above. Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.
I would suggest taking out ALL the plugs. The engine will turn over much faster and not drain the battery. You may find that the fuel in the engine has become diluted with water. This turning over without plugs will do a couple of things: a)free up and lubricate everything. b) give the fuel pump the greatest chance of getting fuel through to the cylinders, c) purge some stale fuel out of the engine. You should be able to smell petrol vapour once it's coming through, albeit feintly. c)Give you chance to check the spark on each plug. NOTE THE LOCATION OF EACH PLUG LEAD! If these get swapped round, it will never start until they are corrected!
