Help me with a motor interchange

I have a 2001 Pontiac Montana 3.4 L. The engine needs head gaskets at a minimum and has 150,000 miles.

Will a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am 3.4L motor fit exactly, or will it need to be altered in any way? I have received differing opinions- some say it must be another 2001, some say it must be a 2001-2002 from another Montana. HELP!!!!

It is definitely the head gasket.

I'm looking for an engine that will swap exactly, without changing the intake/exhaust/emissions etc. I'm sure that not every GM 3.4 will interchange perfectly- I'm trying to determine what would have to be swapped on a 2000 Grand Am engine vs the 2001 Montana.

Thank you- I suspected that there would be some required changes- thanks for the details. I will look for an 01.

Believe it or not all GM 300 series motors are very similar and they all give head or intake problems whether its in the grand am, grand prix or montana the 3.4 is just that a 3.4. GMs not going to make a different 3.4 for each car they're all the same, it will fit. Do yourself a favor and make sure its not the intake gasket thats the actual culprit.

I am going throught the same thing i am doing a motor swap in a grand am i am using a 99 3.4 from a grand am and am putting it in a 2000 grand am i have already had to change the upper and lower intake harnesses and installed the motor in the car and now i have no spark. I have found out that the cam sensor could be an issue becase they are different from the 2000 in the 99 motor. PLEASE make sure you do your homework on your motor swap i am on my 5th day on this car and am ready to burn it.

Good luck Mike

How do I adjust valve lash on a 2001 pontiac montana 3400 enging

The lifters are hydraulic, so adjusting them is not possible. The lifters can take up very little play, so valve ticking when cold is normal. I have had two of these engines. Be sure to have the heads torqued properly, to keep play at a minimum.

How to replace 2000 montana head gaskets

The top part of the engine has to come off. That will get you to the heads. The gaskets are under the large heads the spark plugs go into.

I have a 2000 Pontiac Montana, I have antifreeze mixing with my oil, what could be causing this and how do i fix it?

hey okiebelgium,
Hate to break the bad new to you, but when you coolant is mixing with you oil it is almost a sure thing that you have a blown head gasket. Im guessing this pontiac has higher miles, usually that is when you see something like this happened. In most cases high gaskets start leaking from abuse or lack of maintenance, not that you did either, but maybe the owned before you was very rough with it.

The fix, this is a huge job something that, if you have never replaced a head gasket before can take weeks. If you take to a dealership it is going to cost big bucks and some independent shops wont even touch a job like that.

Let me know if you have anymore questions, thanks.

2000 3.4 Montana. It looks like coolant mixed in with the oil. Do these engines have gaskets that are known to fail. The van has only 40,000 miles on it. Thank you

You can thank the EPA for this...Manufacturers are using more and more aluminium in engines to cut weight and meet "standards"...More weight=less mpg. Aluminium "grows" at a faster rate than does iron when heated. When mated to a iron block, something has to give...usually the head gasket.
This problem is not specific to your vehicle, but all vehicles in general. Head gasket manufacturers have done a great job of trying to compensate for this problem, but still, gaskets sometimes fail. What is really amazing is that many of them do manage to last a really long time! I know this dosen't help you fix your problem, but it will help you understand why it happened. One good thing...If your vehicle is repaired by a good shop, using quality replacement gaskets, chances are the repair will last far longer than the original setup did.
good luck!!

2001 Montana needs Head Gaskets replaced

i know the shop told you its the head gasket, but it sounds like the water pump is out not the gasket.. because the pump is barely pulling water, thats why the car is hot but no hot air..if rad. is full of coolant, even if it is the head gasket you should still have hot air.... this is a lot cheaper than a head gasket..$100 verse $2000.. i know what sounds bettter to me..lol.. trust me...keith..
