Is a 2001 escort, 2.0 soc engine a non interference engine?

If timing belt breaks on 2001 escort, 2.0 soc engine...is the motor ruined?

The 2.0 SOHC engine is an interference engine, so yes you could damage valves and pistons if the belt breaks while the engine is running.

cam shaft timing marks on back of cams ,two slots ,use a flat piece of metal to align .remove no1 spark plug and drop long thin screwdriver down it to bring piston just below tdc,then align cams so both cams are on the rock (valves closed) with knob on back cam aligning with pick up sensor left side between lobes.then bring piston up to tdc and fit belt.turn engine over twice with socket on bottom pulley to make sure no valves clear pistons.Remember to remove flat edge from back of cams i didnt last time and bent my home made tool

Hello mawbea: My name is Roger I will answer your question. You did not say which engine is in your car. So if you have a 2.0 SOHC engine. If the belt broke you should be Ok. If you have the 2.0 DOHC engine. The likely hood of bending the valves are just about a guarantee. How ever with any engine using a timing belt it is possible to bend a valve.Should you need more help please just ask.

It's has a timing belt, also it's an interference engine, if belt goes bad it will bent valve's .

I looked at interference engine list.
Ford engines
1.8L--1.9 L and 2.0L sohc are not interference engines. I can only go by the database info.

ford escort/ focus engine 2.0 l spi sohc 1997-2004 has been identified as an intereference engine and that means very likely valve to piston damage
( auto data timing belt information )
note-- up to 2002 year Ford has not recommended a timing belt interval for changing
Ford has however recommended a replacement every 120.000 miles using the service history as a guide
however good professional trade practice recommends every 60.000 miles ( 100.00klms) and the replacement work should include replacement of the crank and cam shaft seals and idler pulleys involved ( the biggest destroyer of belts is oil)
recommended labor time is 2 hours
if the belt has broken then head removal and valve work will add up to 5 hours to that time

IS A 2001 VOLVO S80 2.4 MOTOR A NON INTERFERANCE MOTOR

The S60 model has a 2.4 five cylinder engine. That engine is not an interference engine.
The S80 uses a 6 cylinder 2.8 or 2.9 engine if it is sold in the US.

Timing jumped and the car stopped,i turned the engine and it was free spinning,does this mean the head is messed up

There are two types of engines in this regard--interference and non-interference. Many newer engines are now interference types to increase performance, but this means that the pistons can hit the valves causing major damage when the timing belt breaks. Non-interference engines will suffer no real damage when belt breaks, so you need to get the engine type from under the hood on a data plate and google search your exact engine. Good luck.

2000 ford escort zx2 quit running on the wife this morning still has electric\r\npower starter sounds like it turns but it will not start dont sound like ti turns motor over never heard of a start problem...

Pull the upper timing belt cover, just some 8mm bolts, and verify the if the engine is turning or not. If the timing belt breaks it will sound like the engine is spinning faster with the starter than normal. The great thing is that these engines are non interference and will not suffer valve damage if the belt breaks. If the engine is not turning with the starter then you have a bad solenoid in the starter and it will have to be replaced. This is a non-interference engine. Anyone saying anything different is using an old book. Some Ford dealers might even tell you it is interference. There are reliefs cut into the top of the pistons to clear the valves if the belt breaks. There is a how-to posted here and on Team ZX2 .com

The straight answer is that it most likely is a interference engine, but you dont really know until its confirmed, plus special tools are needed to align the cam timing. Any repair shop can do a cyl leakage test to confirm that for you.

The ZX2 Zetec is a non-interference engine. This means the valves are not capable of touching the pistons at any time. If your belt breaks, there will not be any valve damage. There are reliefs cut into the top of the pistons that allow clearance for the valves if the belt breaks.
