1997 4Runner gear problem

My 1997 4runner developed a gear problem in recent times on an African highway, could not accelerate I had to restart the engine, let it run for a while, then engage gear in REVERSE, before engaging in DRIVE, this only helps for less than a kilometer. I then had to do this over and over again to drive back home. Please advice.

SOURCE: 2002 4Runner - 4 wheel drive indicator won't go off

When the transfer case is not engaged for extended periods of time, the motor inside for the 4WD sticks. Try this: Raise the vehicle on a hoist, and do some tapping on the case while switching the 4WD indicator. Sometimes, this will free up the contacts inside the 4WD shift motor.

Hope this helps. Thank you for choosing FixYa for assistance.

SOURCE: delay in transmission when starting car

Low transmission fluid, clogged transmission filter etc. Check the fluid level, check for leaks if low. Repair any leaks, if leaking from the transmission pan gasket you'll have to replace it. It'll be a good time for a transmission tune-up.

I want to know what the od button on the shifter means in my 98 toyota 4runner

it turns on and off the overdrive for the transmission if you are city driving or towing it should be off if you are highway driving it should be on, when its on it gives you another gear for better mileage when its off it drops down a gear to give you more power. I hope this helps you

Stalling on the road. No check engine light on. No restart

Hello, it sounds like the timing belt may have slipped on the gears, the top part of the timing cover can be removed to check the timing marks with the engine at TDC.

I think you need to have it looked at by a local mechanic. By what you describe it sounds like your engine could be severely damaged.

Acceleration

Time for a little tranny work, maybe. How old IS that fluid? It's possible that it's time to replace or at least adjust the innards to get it up to snuff again. When you have the speed problem, does it seem that it is in low gear?
