I have a problem with my 2002 impala; After I fixed the fuel filter, had a tune-up done and even replaced the tensioner because a squealing problem persisted. I still cannot get my car over 10mph. Now i heard it could be the fuel pressure regulator or the fuel pump. How could i know for sure?

probably not fuel filter . probably going to have to remove the upper intake and replace the fuel injector spider(fuel inj assebly) if it is droping fuel pressure it is leaking into the upper manifold

i agree with the fuel pump problem this is quite common with these trucks. but the fuel injectors on this motor are not accesable without removing the plenun and they are not standard fuel rail injectors so you can not test as earlier instructed.

have you made shure there is fuel in the tank, they had alot of problems wth sending units on that year. if so chances are its the fuel pump. try banging on the bottom of the fuel tank while sombody tries to start the vehicle, if it starts replace fuel pump. faulty regulators will usually cause a very rich running condition.

I would change the fuel pressure regulator first, if no change in pressure the fuel pump is on the way out.I have a 01 silverado 4.8 and my fuel pressure is between 55and60 psi.

depending on mileage, but possible tune-up could fix it. if already done then check ignition coil pack and ignition wires also spark plugs, check vacuum hoses for leaks or porous, last injectors clogged - use some techron fuel injector cleaner (wal-mart has them). have worked at G.M. dealership for over 15 years, saw that alot.

I have a 2002 Chevy Impala, it starts great in the morning when the engine is cold, but once the engine warms up it is very difficult to start. It cranks alot and even backfires sometimes. Also I noticed...

Engine is difficult to start when cold
  1. Check the battery condition, battery state of charge and starter motor current draw. Replace the battery if marginal and the starter motor if the current draw is beyond specification.
  2. Check the battery cable condition. Clean the battery terminals and replace corroded or damaged cables.
  3. Check the fuel system for proper operation. A fuel pump with insufficient fuel pressure or clogged injectors should be replaced.
  4. Check the engine's tune-up status. Note the tune-up specifications and check for items such as severely worn spark plugs; adjust or replace as needed. On vehicles with manually adjusted valve clearances, check for tight valves and adjust to specification.
  5. Check for a failed coolant temperature sensor, and replace if out of specification.
  6. heck the operation of the engine management systems for fuel and ignition; repair or replace failed components as necessary.
Engine is difficult to start when hot
  1. Check the air filter and air intake system. Replace the air filter if it is dirty or contaminated. Check the fresh air intake system for restrictions or blockage.
  2. Check for loose or deteriorated engine grounds and clean, tighten or replace as needed.
  3. Check for needed maintenance. Inspect tune-up and service related items such as spark plugs and engine oil condition, and check the operation of the engine fuel and ignition management system.

Tune-up ?

Hi Irwin, Your car should only need new sparkplugs. Be certain they are gapped propperly! Other than that, check the air filter. If you can't see light through it, replace. Be sure to go around, not just check in one spot. Check the brake fluid, if down top up and get a shop to check the brake pads. As the pads wear, the fluid level drops to compensate. Check the coolant level, belts, an hoses! Wash an wax! Done! Frankster016
