Went to my car this morning, did not leave lights on or anything so I know it's not the battery, I did put the key in the ignition and run back into the house for 2 mins and left the door open. The "dinging sound" indicating the key is in ignition was going when I left. But when i got in and turned the key everything went dead, no turn over sound from the engine, no lights would go on. Absolutely dead...I had to run to work so I jumped in with my wife and caught a ride with her but in thinking about it, would that be a security feature of some sort that shuts everything down like that?

That's a good one. Follow the cable. Most of the cases is under the hood near cabin wall.

The dial should come up slowly to just a hair above the center point. This should happen within the first few minutes of driving.
Please feel free to contact me regarding your MINI on my contact page here grassrootsgarage.com . Hopefully there is nothing wrong, otherwise, I hope I can help.

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
As a first course of action, please check if you have fuel. It can be the reason why it won't start. If fuel is good then the problem can be on the fuel pump. If the fuel pump is faulty, it won't sip fuel from the tank going to the engine. A humming sound on the engine will indicate that the fuel pump is working, if you don't hear anything then the fuel pump must be replaced.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!
