Did this happen right after you replaced the fuel pump? and when you did pump, did you disconnect the battery?

Replace the ignition switch. I had a simular problem with my 96 Jeep Country. Replaced the same parts you did. Check on the ignition switch there were meal shavings and the wires were arching. Runs like a dream now.

You need to replace the crankshaft sensor, it's mounted behind the engine at the top of the bell housing on the drivers side. It is a pain to do, but a very common problem.

Cherokee revs up wont start

Your description is too vague to give specific advise. However, if you are stating that the engine turns over when you turn the key but it wont run, then you want to check a few possibilities. Fuel, Spark, compression. Make sure the engine is getting fuel. Then check for spark at one of the plug wires. Then check cylinder compression. No fuel can be a fuel pump, plugged filter, or pump electrical connection, like pump relay or wires. Spark problem can be ignition coil, coil pack, distributor module, distributor points. Compression can be piston rings, valves, head gasket. This is not everything, but it may help you!

My jeep cherokee sport will not start what do I check first?

In a 96 Jeep not many sensors are involved. Basically Fuel and spark delivery at right time should start car if your Starter is able to crank the Engine.
If engine is cranking then the battery is Okay. Check Spark directly at the spark plugs and fuel pressure at the fuel rail. You may pull out one spark plug and check spark out of engine.
Try spraying Starting fluid in Air Intake while cranking. If Jeep starts then not enough fuel is being delivered by fuel pump. If you find no spark at plugs then check circuit for starter relay, Crank sensor/cam sensor problems.
A kill switch or bad Alarm system can also cause this problem.

The power is on and off so starting is hard

Need to try the crank shaft position senor. It work off the turning of the crank. It the sensor goes bad then the engine has no idea what position the crank is in, so therefore you won't get it to start. I had to replace a few of these on Jeeps , this is a big problem for Jeeps.
