In the morning when I start my S10 you can't give it any gas right away because if you do it will start sputtering and popping out of the throttle body into the air box. The first time I start the truck it won't stay on, the motor shuts off right away. It will usually stay on after the second time I start it. I have replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump. The check engine light comes on briefly in the morning but it turns off. After it has completely warmed up it runs fine.

check O2 Sensors, add a product called Ametech restore at next oil change, this does wonders for your vehicle, improved my BHP & MPG threefold , also as you say it smells bad (Like rotten eggs?) this will be the catalytic converter, either replace or add a product called cataclean to the fuel & take it for a run, It literally cleans all the **** fro the catalytic converter removing that rotten egg smell
the only way to tell for sure is to have the engine anylized with a real time scanner, it could be a sensor or actuator that is not throwing a code so a scan for codes will not help, if all seems to be od start looking for vacuum leaks, air bubbles in the fuel, fuel pressure constant, etc
the fuel pump may of went out or your idle may be turned down to low the fuel pump is located on the top of the gas tank to get to it you must drop the gas tank then take it to your local auto part store and they will test it
