Smell gas outside occasionally - 2002 Nissan Xterra

If you smell gas. the service engine soon light should be on. It may be several things, parts of EVAP system, but I would look at the top of the fuel tank. Nissan has campaign on fuel tanks, where they replace the sending unit, but if the tank is corroder beyond repair aka getting re-sealed, then Nissan will replace your tank for FREEEEEEEEEE along with the sending unit. Just go to your local Nissan dealer and have them run you r VIN number to see if you have campaigns on you r truck. You may also have the lower steering shaft campaign. have your VIN checked. start there.
