1983 Volvo 240 DL... Sudden loss of Power.

So I was driving down the i-5 at about 80mph. Everything was fine and then all of a sudden I slowed down at an incredible rate. I checked to see if my foot was still on the gas pedal. It was. I hit the pedal a few times and nothing... i got to the side of the road and coasted, and then my car turned off completely. I coasted into a rest area (complete miracle). The engine try's to turn over but nothing happens. A mechanic said both fuel pumps could have gone out. I need some advice! Is it the fuel pumps? Or other parts that have to do with fuel? How many fuel pumps are there and how do I get to them? This is such a bummer.  Help please!

Yes you have two fuel pumps, the main and a in tank fuel pump, not lightly both pumps die like this, check your fuses, you have an main 25amp fuse next to the batt, replace it check your fuses 6 and 4,also you have two relays(fuel pump) just under the glove box, replace them also. You can test these by,bypassing them. You can find an wire about 6in and jump your number 6 and 4 fuses,You should hear the pumps running.

Well,..

Outofworkjoe gave excellent information and I can tell he knows his stuff. Those could be causes and should be checked in that line of repair.

However, for the car to have been running fine and in operation. For such a sudden occurrence I'm inclined to believe it could very well your timing belt could have broken.

Just changed one on a 1983 and the symptoms were almost exact,..

Don't let that worry you though because it only took 2 hours to change with TDC alignment and all,.. the belt wasn't even $20.00 bucks either.

I have a light on my '93 Volvo 240 that comes on each time I use the brakes. The light is in the lower right corner and looks simething like an upside down light bulb.

This sounds like an information sign that lets you know your brake fluid level is low in master resesivoir. At a point were you push the brake pedal and drops the level ane sensor comes on. Sudden stop and go and on turn driving cane do this if level ids low.

Volvo 240 dl 1987 .. fuel issue....driving down the road, car

Sounds like you need a fuel pump. There is an access panel in the floor of the car to get to the pump.

Sudden loss of power while driving

Hi There, You need to check you automatic transmission fluid (ATF) levels which controls your power steering, if it is drained you need to top it up if the container is cracked, you need to change it. Next, your engine needs retuning to stem down the excessive revving.

Engine swap 1985 240 DG into 1983 Volvo 245

Go ahead and swap the transmissions, and that should be about it. The b230 and b23 engines are basically the same block, so there should be no trouble there.

1983 Volvo DL has a couple problems

As for the fuel tank cap and assuming you have lost the key, try some keys that are similar in size. If you have the key and it won't open, you might try some graphite lube in the lock, let it sit a few minutes, then try it. If you lost the key, you might try a filing cabinet key, sometimes those work. A locksmith might be able to pick it for you.

As for losing power, check the wiring to the battery and the fuse from the driver's side fender to the injectors. If the seller washed off the engine, he may have gotten water in that fuse link. Pull the fuse, look for moisture, put some electrical contact lube on the fuse tabs and replace it. The battery cables should be tight and the ground should be tight at the grounding point on the engine block. If that all checks, it could be throttle body needing a cleaning, or a mass air meter needing a change.

If the simple stuff checks out, get a computer diagnosis. Don't waste time on shops that don't know Volvos and make them show you the codes that they get from the computer probe. Been there, done that.
