1999 Monte Carlo fuel gauge stopped working

Fuel gauge began acting like a geiger counter going empty, full and anywhere in between. Then when it was empty, it read full and stayed there. Filled it up and it reads full right now. Don't know when it'll start going whacko again though. Please help since I'm bad about watching my gauge as it is and will more than likely run out of gas. Hate that.

Thank you for your solutions. I'll give them a try. If they don't work, I may be back. Once in awhile the car is hard to start and seems to start up, but dies before I'm sure. Could that be a clue?

Hi there. If the fuel gauge is the only one acting up, its probably a loose or corroded wire on top of the gas tank where the fuel pump sets in. It could also be a loose wire on the back of the gauge, which is easier to get to so you could always check that first by popping off the dash pannel and pulling out the instrument cluster and looking for a broke wire on the back of the fuel gauge. But if I had to bet I would guess its on the other end by the fuel pump. Worse case sinario, maybe a bad sending unit.

Have several problems abs light on traction control light, low coolant light on, seat belt light on ,driver side heated seats stopped working and fuel gauge doesnt work always reads full

My 2003 Monte Carlo and my husbands 2003 chevy pickup both had the ABS and traction control lights on. When it began it only came on once in a while but got worse until the lights were on all the time. After several attempts to find the problem we purchased a ABS Brack Scan. Part #CP9449. Although it doesn't pinpoint the exact problem it does tell you what wheel has the issue and possible problems. My problem was a bad wire in the harness. Good luck!

My 1999 monte carlo fuel gauge bounces from full to empty and every where inbetween it only does this when it gets down to a 1/4 tank can you help

The fuel potentiometer is faulty. You can remove this from the tank and check for the contact loss in the variable resistor.
Use a multimeter to check for open link in the brush.
If repair is not possible replace with the same type.

I have an '05 Monte Carlo SS supercharged and my problem is with the fuel gauge. It used to work intermittently, now it reads whereever it wants. It does drop (at least most of the time) when the tank...

There was an issue with the sending unit itself. There were 4 or 5 thin contact points on the sending unit. The new ones have 3 thicker contact points, they tend to last longer. As the contacts break off one by one the fuel gauge becomes intermittent and then nothing.

2002 monte carlo fuel gauge doesnt work, pump works ok.

It is likely the fuel level sending unit. I had a customer with an 03 Monte Carlo that the pump went out and the fuel gauge hadn't worked in about a year. We replaced the fuel pump module and it took care of both problems. I believe the sending unit is available separately from the complete module.
