Merces benz c230 timing chain replacement procedure

I have a car as above w 180k miles and want to know the criteria for timing chain replacement. car is running fine but was told that chain can be an isssue at high miles. i'm a decent back yard mechanic -i've replaced timing belts on japanese cars before--how much harder is the chain on a benz? in particular does the head have to come off or is the chain accessible from just a cover?

So it takes some Pin pullers, or a litlte bit of messing around witth proper sized (heavy duty) bolt to pull the pins, i cannot seem to find the timing marks on mine once i got it offand want to put back on, i have a chilton and it doesnt help. if you buy the 100 -200 dolar shop manual from bentley it would probably be quite simple :)

pull, pins, timing cover, water pump, solenoid, etc. to get to timing cover, uppe and lower, pull valve cover, and loosen cam (exhaust side) to get chain off. :)

I have a 2005 c230 kompressor that needs timing chain replaced. i was quoted it would cost 1300 to 1500. does this seem reasonable? also, what other damage could occur with the chain failure?

Chain failure is pretty much game over. You could bend your valves and all sorts of other stuff. That price is a little high, but it is a very invasive procedure. If you were driving an 88 Toyota Corolla it may be a little cheaper, but Mercedes doesn't make anything easy to get to. It will probably take close to 6 or 7 hours from start to finish.

I would shop around a little more just to try to get a good deal, but I would say that $900 would be the lowest you may get. I know this probably wasn't much help, but that is just how it goes sometimes. Sorry.

After having timing chain replaced in my 2000 C230, both cams have subsequently sheered causing major repair cost. Could this have been avoided?

oil galleries mite hav got plug or pump cudda failed causing no lubricant to the cams--on a benz Im not sure how deep the procedure is to get to chain but theres always that chance of hurting other components--ask the shop or du an investigation for legal purposes

When does the timing belt on a 2006 c230 mercedes need to be changed

I looked this up and the engine used in this car does not use a timing belt, it has a timing chain, they are only replaced if the engine is torn down to be rebuilt.
