My 1999 Infiniti I30 is not cranking. I have power and lights but the engine doesnt crank. I put a rebuilt starter in March 2008 . It died last nigt and this morning I was able to turn it over and drive it home. When I got it home and tried to restart it was dead again. I tapped the starter but still nothing. Occasionally it will crank a little and then stop again. ANy suggestions? Mine is a 1995 I30 that will not start up akk of a sudden. I drove it to the gas station to put gas in and when I went to start it up mothing would happen. I looked for loose connections but found nothing. I had the car towed back home and when it came off of the flat bed it started right up. The car worked fine for a few day then once again it would not start up after driving if a short distance. I had it towd once more but this time it still will not start. I have checked the bettery, it is fine. Lights, raido and car remote work fine. The alarm will go off normally too. When I turn the key there is no noise at all, no clicking or anything. I assume that there is a short in it somewhere but I dont have a clue what it might be You can contact me at [email protected] Thank you for any and all help. I am just out of the hospital after spending the last 14 weeks in the ICU for a ruptured colon and need the car running to get back an forth to the doctors...
This will almost always be the starter itself. If I had a dollar for all the bad starters I've seen on Infinitis I'd be rich. Even though they are far less expensive, rebuilt starters are definintely not the way to go. I've seen them last 1 or 2 days, or 1 or 2 years. The starter will do absolutely nothing when it is bad, you turn the key and no noise, no clicking, no nothing. Often times you can have someone tap on the starter with a bar or something as you try to turn it over. It is down low on the drivers side of the engine. If it starts, don't bank on it starting again. But that is one way you can diagnose it yourself. I just would not recommend an auto part store starter.

Starter solenoid or starter relay could be the culprit.
