Steps to change a spark plug - 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix

Obtain manufacturer recommended spark plugs for your vehicle with proper gap (.044 from toyota forum)
3/8 drive ratchet with extension and spark plug socket.
Only perform spark plug change on a COLD engine.
Remove one spark plug boot at a time, so as not to confuse wire location.
Remove spark plug number 1 and replace with new one, recommended torque is 150 inch/lbs from toyota forum, but if you don't have a torque wrench, just snug them up good, don't overtighten.
Same procedure 2,3 and 4 cylinders

Open hood remove spark plug wires get your spark plug socket, place over plug and remove.
tools needed, spark plug socket, extension and ratchet.

Basic Instructions.
Step 1
Locate your spark plugs
look for other obstructions besides your spark plug wires
if you have any other obstructions you will need to remove them as well to gain access to your spark plugs.
Step 2
Remove the spark plug wire for one single spark plug at a time.
this will insure you will not replace the wrond spark plug wire to the incorrect spark plug,
if not done this way you could change the firing order of your engine.
Step 3
With your spark plug Socket and wrench rotate the spark plug in a counter clock wise direction for removing.
Step 4
After you have removed your spark plug insert your new replacement spark Plug into your spark plug socket before inserting it into the correct location. spark plug sockets are made to hold on to the spark plug for easy removal and install.
Step 5
insert your new spark plug,
before you rotate your spark plug for tightening rotate the spark plug a 1 quarter turn in the counter clock wise direction, then start tightening the spark plug by rotating it in a clockwise direction
This will insure you will not strip the threads.
Step 6
Continue rotation your spark plug in the clock wise direction untill snug, then with just a lil more pressure tighten it up just a little more.
be sure to not put to much force on the spark plug after it has been snug, you just have to apply a little more pressure but not to much that could cause it to break.
Step 7
After tightening the spark plug replace the correct spark plug wire.
then move on to the next spark plug and follow the same instructions.

if you have any other visiable obstructions preventing you access for replacing your spark plugs you will need instructions on how to remove them parts. i have just instructed you on how to remove and reinstall the spark plugs only.

Step 1
To access all six spark plugs, we need to loosen the intake manifold. This will require removal of attached components.

• Unclip and remove the black insulating material
• Disconnect the three PCV tubes. Push the tab across and pull outwards

Step 2
Unclip the purge solenoid from the intake manifold. It slides off towards the firewall.
Step 3
Unclip the throttle body loom and disconnect the intake pipe. Also unbolt the support bracket as circled.
Step 4
Remove the five long bolts located on top of the intake manifold. The bolt closest to the front is shorter than the rest. Keep this in mind when reinstalling.
Step 5
Next, remove the final bolt securing the manifold to the engine. You will need to unscrew this bolt entirely, however you will not be able to remove it from the manifold due to a lack of clearance.

Step 6
Raise the intake manifold and place an object underneath it to support it. This will provide enough clearance to access all the spark plugs.
Step 7
Unclip all looms from the ignition coils. Simply push the grey tab downwards, then press on the connector and disconnect.
Step 8
Unbolt the ignition coils and remove from the engine.
Step 9
Using a spark plug socket and breaker bar, gently remove the spark plugs from the engine.
Step 10
Install the new spark plugs by applying a light coating of anti-size and gently thread them into position by hand. Be very careful not to cross thread the plugs.
Tighten with a torque wrench to 20nm.

Hi. Here's the procedure on how to change the spark plugs.

Step 1 Connect the spark plug socket to the socket extension.

Step 2 Open the hood and pull the spark plug wires off the top of the engine. You may need to wiggle them back and forth while pulling up on the plug wires in order to remove them.

Step 3 Lower the spark plug socket into the engine and push the socket over the top of the spark plug.

Step 4 Turn the spark plug counterclockwise with a socket wrench to loosen and remove it from your Sienna's engine.

Step 5 Pull the old spark plug out of the socket and insert a new spark plug into the socket with the electrodes facing out.

Step 6 Lower the spark plug into the engine and thread and tighten the spark plug.

Step 7 Slide the plug wire down into the plug well and push it over the top of the spark plug until it seals the plug. The wire should fit nice and snug over the spark plug.

Step 1: Disconnect the negative wire to the battery. I did this to be safe.

Step 2: Disconnect the oxygen sensor from the air intake. Do not pull from the wires only pull from the boot. Be careful not to break the sensor either

Step 3: Pull the tube connected to the left side of the air intake off then remove the air intake.

Step 4: Disconnect the map sensor and all other electric components that are attached to the manifold

Step 5: Disconnect the cable that is connected to the throttle body (you do not have to take the throttle body off of the manifold to do this).

Step 6: On the left hand side of the manifold there are 2 manifold support brackets loosen them up but do not take them off. When they are loose just pull the top part of the bracket that is connected to the manifold back and off the screws. .

Step 7: On the right hand side of the manifold there is another support bracket that is connected to the throttle body. First take off the screws then where the support bracket connects to the cylinder bellow the manifold loosen the two bolts until you are able to slide the bracket out of the way.

Step 8: On top of the manifold there are six bolts unscrew them.

Step 9: Important! Before you remove the manifold to get to the spark plugs be very careful and remove the manifold by lifting it straight up and then pull it towards you slow. The reason for this is because there is a valve connected to the manifold directly in the back that you do not want to break. The tubes that are connected are long enough so you can take the whole manifold and place it to the right just out of the way so you can get to the spark plugs. (before changing the spark plug it is recommended that you take compressed air and blow away the dirt surrounding the spark plug area. This is done so that no dirt gets into the combustion chamber when you remove the spark plug.)

Step 10: Once the manifold is out of the way disconnect the electric connectors that are attached to every spark plug. Pull them from the boot of the connector.

Step 11: Unbolt the spark plug tube then pull it straight out and then with the spark plug socket unscrew the spark plug and replace it with a new one (repeat 6 times).

Step 12: After the spark plugs are in on the left hand side of the engine in the back you will see a tube that says pcv. Remove the tube from the engine and unscrew the valve and replace it with a new one.

Step 13: Put everything back and you are good to go.

If the owner will be the one to change the spark plug then. the owner should locate the spark plugs . then prepare the equipments that is going to be used to change spark plug .First disconnect the spark plug cable to the spark pug . Then use the equipment to take the spark plug off to the engine. The spark plug should be twisted counter clock wise using the equipment to remove the spark plug.Then replace the spark plug.In returning the spark plug ,using the equipment you have to twist the spark plug clock wise . Then set the distributor shaft turn it according to the proper firing order that will be set to the spark plug if it is 1,3,4,2. Then the distributor shaft mark will be on 1.If 2,3,4,1 then the distributor shaft mark will be on 2. Then connect the spark plug cable , after connecting the owner have to test start the car so that to if it back fires .If it back fires then the owner have to repeat again the setting of the firing order of the spark plug until it will not back fires.If the owner don't have time to do the job in servicing or changing spark plug then the owner have to go to a car mechanic and let them change the spark plug.

Remove the plugs, make sure the new plugs are gapped to .040, put anti-seize on the threads of the new plugs, then install them and tighten accordingly.
