I have a dodge caravan with a starting problem. When a start is attempted, the starter wont turn the engine over, the battery and everything is fine because it will start normally on occosion. If we are trying to start and no turn over, we move to neutral, let the van roll a small distance and return to park, repete this a few times and the van will start normally. Sometimes just moving the shifter around in park or neutral will do the trick. We went to dodge and auto zone but no neutral safety switch is available? I think the animal exists just under a different name, is this my problem and if so what is the new and improved name of the neutral safety switch. The van is a 2003, automatic with the 3.3 V6. thanks.

This is a bad PCM. Try to disconnect the security system first and if it still does not start then it is the PCM.

I would start with the Starter check for voltage getting to the starter should read 12 volts at both terminals

It is in side the trans on top of the valve body. Why do you think you need to replace it?

Thanks for the response but I will not be replacing the starter, it works perfect, the neutral safety switch is now called the manual lever position sensor and the wiring diagram that I now have confirms this and a quick jumper accross this sensor and it starts just fine now and I will be ordering a new sensor tomorrow.
mecwpri, i have the same problem... Where is that neutral safety switch located on an 03 caravan?... Is it at the end of the shifter cable? I know my relays aren't bad and that the starter gets power if I arc/jump the starter relay, the engine trys to turn over but doesn't finish when I do that, otherwise the van does nothing when I turn the key, so I'm stumped, This is my last idea... Thanks for any clarification you can give me on the location of the neutral safety switch.
