i had the same problem in jan 09, i got my turbo replaced but im still getting smoke, after using 2 cans of stop leak the problem is still there, when the turbo was getting changed i notice that the intercooler was covered in old oil inside, i have been told by a mechanic to flush the intercooler and return pipe with petrol to clear it, hopefully this will stop the problem.i had the same problem in jan 09, i got my turbo replaced but im still getting smoke, after using 2 cans of stop leak the problem is still there, when the turbo was getting changed i notice that the intercooler was covered in old oil inside, i have been told by a mechanic to flush the intercooler and return pipe with petrol to clear it, hopefully this will stop the problem.

I am a BMW technician and i see this problem daily. There is a filter on the top of your rockercover. it is called an oil separater or a breather filter. you can only get the filter at a BMW garage so if you go to stores and ask them for this filter they will know what you are talking about if you tell them you are after having your turbo replaced. Fit this filter and you will notice the smoke will get better if it does not go away completely you might wait another 3-4 weeks and replace it again. hope this helps.
I'd say you might need to have the rings and valves checked, you can us an additive like STP to help seal the rings. Go to E-Bay and type in 2000BMW 3 Series Manual, I;m sure you will find some there.

i had a similar problem on my 2002 E46 320d, i put it to BMW who changed the fuel filter and a fuel sensor then hey presto normal service resumed! hope this helps
The turbos are terrible on the 320d. If you plan on keeping the car get a new turbo. £950 from BMW themselves. You will get a 1 or 2 year warranty on the turbo. Well worth it.
normally blue smoke is burning oil and if this is the case you may have a valve stem oil seal which is leaking these prevent oil getting into the top of the bore via the valves. if it does you grt the oil burning on start up givivg blue smoke and to fix these you may have to remove the cylinder hesd i work on lorries and classic cars and some you can get away with leaving the head on but have never worked on a bmw
I'm assuming that that smoke was more previlant while going uphill because that's when the turbo would be really spolling up to max psi. I would guess that if you really got on the gas hard and got the turbo going even on a flat surface, that you would notice the smoke too. The loss of power and the white/grey smoke are tell tale signs that your turbo is bad or starting to fail. Good luck!
