Ford taurus 1995 will not move when started

Car starts but doesn't move when put in any gear. there were no pre warning signs of a transmission problem, the fluid was full and clear. The car was driving and just stopped moving upon acceleration. It idles and makes no unusual noises.

I have 2004 ford taurus..went to start it put it in drive..it would not move in any gear. believe it may be something called transmission pump...someome one suggested check transmisssion fluid..then start car..let it warm up a little recheck..if it goes back down to the appro. level it may not be trans. My car is at a transmission shop right now..no word yet...

Guest on Mar 10 - what did the transmission shop tell you? I hope I can solve it with the sensor. I kinda think it's something simple , considering there were absolutely zero warning signs.

I have a 2001 ford taurus and it did the same thing a while back, call the dealer and ask them for the sensor that is behind the brake pedal. It is not the transmission .. cost less that 25 bucks to fix and takes about 20 min

Did you call the dealer and ask them for the sensor behind the brake... I promise you it is that simple

Can not move the gear selecter the button will not go all the way in and the rear brake lights do not come as well

Hi Jeff,
This is an old warning issue or procedure, I had the same problem a few years ago with my Ford Taurus 1995, if rear stop lights not work, you wont be able to moved the shift out of Parking (P); this is to avoid driving without rear stop lights. If no lights, normally a fuse is blow out or all bulb lights are gone, please check.
There is an alternate procedure to be able to drive your car, but, avoid driving without Stop lights. Turn the ignition key to the point before starting the engine, this release the lock for the driving wheel and transmission shift, press the brake, put the shift in Neutral (N) and start the engine. Im not sure if your Ford Edge has the no key starting button or fob, there is a procedure to release the locks and be able to drive, should be in your drivers manual, but, again; the intention is to avoid moving the car without Stop Lights.
I hope this helps. Happy Holidays and take care.

We have a 1995 Ford Taurus sedan and sometimes in order to start it we have to put it in neutral. There seems to be some give in the gear shift when you put it in drive if you're not careful you can...

This can be a dangerous issue. If the gear shift is that sensitive a simple bump could cause the transmission to shift out or into a gear. At higher speeds this could be very dangerous. I suggest you take the car into a transmission shop to have them diagnose the problem. It may be as simple as a linkage adjustment. Err on the side of safety.

Sounds like your transmission is no longer engaging the gears. this could be bad clutch plates (automatics have them too), loose connector, etc...

Transmission suddenly quit working

if the car doesn't move then the speedo would not move, right? or do u mean something else? yours trans has failed or the trans digital range selector switch is bad, have a scanner put on the system and see if any trouble codes are present.

Gear shift moves fine will not engage gear.

then the transmission has failed or has sticking engagement solenoid in trans pan, have the fluid and filter replaced and see if that corrects the problem

My car wont move out of park and the braks lights arent working.

my ford taurus did this to me too.... your car wont move out of park because it might be the neutral safety switch because your brake light connector piece might have come undone...
now first off the brakes (my switch was above my brake pedal) and just make sure its clipped in and then your neutral safety switch should go of and you can put it into gear.
if you cant find the brake thing to see if its unplugged just turn your key slightly on before all your dash lights come on and put the car into neutral and then start your car and you can put it into gear.
