When driving my 2009 hyundai elantra, i hear an intermittent rubbing sound coming from the front passenger side.it sounds like something rubbing against the brake rotor.I checked the dust plate behind the rotor.not the problem.the front end is tight. the noise seems to occur at speeds of 100km/h plus and also when going over dips in the road. any suggestions?

This behavior is due to the innovation of the ECT-i ( Electronic Controlled Transmission with intelligence). Major car companies are developing this type of transmissions nowadays. And, since they are in their early stages, is still not fine-tuned; ergo still under research. This doesn't mean the transmission will fail either.

The vibration indicates the car is in low revs when engaged in the last gear. Let's say it's a 5 speed auto trans... and the car is going about 35mph at 5th gear... even though the ecu in the car recognizes it should go to 4th gear, the only thing the car ecu can do is reduce the gas input, because the trans got it's own ecu, and it's not controlled by the main ecu anymore. When you
accelerate, increases revs, ergo downshifting to 4th gear and getting rid of the vibration. The powerplant in the vehicle is still OK. No need to worry about.

You have a bad front wheel bearing on the left side because you say when you turn right the noise goes away, because when you turn right the suspension lifts up on the opposite side and releives some weight on the bearing causing it to quiet down. No it is NOT a DIY repair unless you have some pretty extensive tools. the quickest easiest and least expensive way to fix this is to go to a wrecking yard and buy a steering knuckle for the left. it will have a wheel bearing already pressed into it and all you have to do is replace the whole thing and you are done. do not open any brake lines or hoses to do this job just gently press the brake caliper piston back about 1/2" so it will fit over the brake pads when you reinstall.
please rate this advice a fixya if you feel I have provided excellent service.

SOURCE: Noise coming from front of car

It sounds exactly like a wheel bearing problem. The right side its seems would be the problem. When you turn right it puts more pressure on the bad bearing making it louder. I would suggest replacing both. If on is gone the other one isn't far off. Hope this helps

This is not a rich mans car so its normal. Your hearing the solinod that lets you take the car out of park after the brake is depressed so the car can't be put in gear unless the brake is on. If the noise bothers you the soliniod can be found and wrapped in insulation like a rich mans car them you can ride on feeling like a rich man too. ( the Beatles sang that a long time ago) and its still true today.

My car just stated to squeal and the lights started diming. I was almost home so I just parked it when I got to the drive way. What could be the problem? Its a new 2009 Hyundai Elantra with almost 30,000...

check to see if the serpentine belt is damaged or broken on the front (passenger side) of the engine, it sounds like it is off, so the battery is not being charged by the alternator which would cause your lights to dim.
