Your owners manual tells you how to override. Usually by inserting a key or pushing a button near the gear shift. (Based on by 2005 Camry and all other Japanese cars I've owned)

Normally to shift do you have to press the brake to get it out of park? and if so then it could be a bad switch on the brake pedal.

Transmission sticks in Park

If you don't think it is a linkage or shift lock solenoid problem, its probably something going on with the park gear in the trans.
Does it make any difference if you set the parking brake first ?

How do you override the transmission shift lock on a 1998 Volkswagen Beetle, when it's stuck in Park?

On most cars of that year and newer you have to have the engine running and be pressing down on the brake pedal to shift out of park. If that does not work try having some one rock the car forward and back while you try to shift out of park. If the rocking trick works in the future while still in gear and holding the brakes set your parking break then shift to park. This will keep the weight of the car of the parking lock in the transmision and prevent the problem from reoccurring. Good Luck!!

1999 Volvo S80 stuck in park

Hi there this sounds like a common fault it also happens on xc70 xc90 an new s80 if you remove the suround from the gear selector you should be able to see the gear linkage cable too the left hand side towards the back of the cable there is a push fit lock nut it is yellow and plastic which locks cable into position it sounds as though the push nut is not gripping the cable if you gently prise open the yellow part to the left of th car it should open the cable is spring loaded so it will stay in position after releaseing the nut push the nut as far forward as it will go so it moves forward on the cable once you have done this push the yellow push nut back in to secure the cable then you should be able to use your car again but what i would sugest is to get it replaced as its started to wear and will only happen again at a later date hope this helps tony.t

2003 s-type jaguar

I, as well as a guy I work with both drive s-types. He had this problem with his.

The problem is with a cable that runs from the shifter to the transmission. There is a bracket which holds the cable in place. This bracket is prone to coming loose and when that happens, your s-type won't shift out of neutral. Simply resecure the bracket and cable. Be sure to use loctite on the bracket screws so it won't happen again.

Gear shift stuck

Are you parked on a slope of any kind ? If so, have someone rock the car backward & forward a bit, while you try to get it out of park.
