98 Toyota 4Runner ignition switch won't turn

Not a problem with the steering wheel being locked. Tried several other keys - this used to work.

a 1998 Toyota Four Runner w/ 133K and good cond. key will not turn pass unlocking steering wheel...tried three different keys....happened a couple of times before but now...won't turn to Acce...again, streeing wheel unlocks but no more

Thanks for the info. The problem was the lock cylinder itself was worn out. To remove it on my '98 4Runner, I removed the four 10mm bolts in the lower panel underneath the steering wheel, and then popped out the small panel surrounding the ignition switch itself. Take off the little white ring that surrounds the keyhole light, and the other ring just slips off. Careful not to lose the little white locking tab if it falls out when you remove the rings. Leave that key light assembly connected. Put in the key, and turn it to "ACC". Look underneath the silver lock cylinder itself and find a small hole. Push a pen or other small object into the hole to release the cylinder from the switch. It pulls straight out. Reverse the steps to install your new lock cylinder. Piece of cake, but much easier if you order a new one and take a good look at it before you start!

Since it wont turn with any of the keys it sounds like the locks cylinder is damaged. I've heard that this happens sometimes to people who drive with large keyrings and heavy bangles dangling when the keys in the ignition. You could try taking the cover off from around the steering column and accessing the exposed ignition and tapping on the ignition switch with the handle of a screwdriver while you jiggle the key. You may need to replace the ignition switch assembly.

Why does my toyota 4runner steering wheel lock while driving

The keyed ignition itself won't stop the lock from engaging. The lock is a spring loaded plunger in the column itself that should be retracted by the keyed ignition. There is wear somewhere in the linkage.

98 Chrysler Town & Country Ignition, steering wheel & gear shift are all locked up. Last night we stopped to get some fast food. When we came back out to the van, it would not allow us to move...

Sometimes the mechanical system that locks your steering wheel has too much vehicle weight which can prevent the key from turning. If you can move the vehicle back and forth while someone turn the steering wheel and turn the ignition switch.

1995 toyota 4runner, ignition switch stuck in lock, cannot get in acc. to remove and replace. have tried normal repair procedures with no success.

Make sure that you steering wheel is not putting too much pressure on the lock. If your wheels are cramped it can make the key switch turn very hard. On one occasion, I had to hold the steering wheel with both hands and have someone else turn the key.
