The car was in a fender bender. The key goes into the ignition and the car starts, shifts into gear and yo can shut the engine down but can't get the key out of the ignition.

You either have problem with the shifter assy, or the shifter cable has come out of adjustment.
If you remove the shifter bezel and center console you will be able to see the shifter cable. There will be a white or black lift tab on the cable. Release the tab and and place shifter in park. If it still does not go into park that means that you will need a shifter assy. If it goes into park with the tab released you push the tab back down with it still in park.
That should take care of your problem.

it sounds like the transmission solenoid or possibly the transmission itself trying to go out

check to see if the brake lights come on it may be a problem with a brake switch under the dash not letting the shift lock release. there may be a seperate switch just for it so check and see it there is two switches touching the brake pedal lever if the brake lights come on.

Is the gear shift button stuck in, if so hit the gear shift a couple of time and that should unstick the botton, allowing you to remove your key

I assume you've checked all connections from the battery and starter to make sure they are clean and tight. It is a little weird that you do not have trouble starting in neutral yet you get a clicking sound in park. My first thought would be the neutral safety switch on the transmission but you shouldn't even get a click in park if that is bad.
One possibility is the contacts in your starter have worn down and are causing too more resistance (explains the clicking). At the back of your starter is a metal cover that is held on by three tiny bolts (6mm). Disconnect the battery first! (You might have to remove the starter to get to this part) Remove this cover and pull out the plunger assembly. Underneath are two brass plates. Compare one plate to the other. If one is noticeably thinner then it could be the cause of the clicking. You will even see a round groove in the plate. You can buy the plunger and contacts from this website: http://www.nationsautoelectric.com/densoparts.html or you can opt to get a starter from your friendly auto parts store. The first picture shows the bad contact on the left. Notice the groove, the metal has become really thin there.

IGNITION KEY WILL NOT RELEASE
It
can be faulty ignition lock cylinder. I suggest to wiggle the steering wheel
a bit and see if the key gets released out. If that is not helping
then first turn steering wheel to right and try removing the key, or next turn
steering wheel to left and see if you can remove the key.

Spray
wd-40 in the ignition key hole and let it remain there for few minutes, after
that once again try to remove the key and see if that helps.

But
if that is not helping then ignition lock cylinder has to be removed out and
key has to be manually removed.
