2001 chevy blazer replaced fuel pump with fuel pick up switch and fues guage still does not work

My fuel guage did not work for over a year. The fuel pump finally died and I replaced it with the whole kit with the fuel pick up switch and the guage on dash still does not work. Any thing that it could be?

okay I managed to track down that their is no power to the fuel level sensor. I check for power on all three leads and there is none. But I do not know which is the correct power feed there is 3 colored wires and I am wondering which color it is that is the main power feed to the FUEL LEVEL SENSOR when looking at the three prong plug is it the left middle or right?

you need the wire diagram, I don't have one for your truck, however, the power wire goes to your relay , one of the two wires, gage wire goes directly to gage , ground wire follows the power wire to relay. make sure you have established good ground from tank/pump. that is the #1 problem with sender/gage function. the sender is an OHM meter, use a meter to measure fuel level in tank, 0 ohms = empty tank, 45 ohms = 1/2 tank,, 90 ohms = full tank ! go to www.gaugeguys.com , they show you a helpful diagram w/wires, & explain your issue , I think this may solve your problem or at least guide you in the right direction.

also, behind your dash/instrument panel, is a voltage regulator for your gages, it steps down 12volt to 5volt for your gages, it can be faulty, the wire or wires to the fuel gage might have a bad connection, also remember, you must re-establish a good ground @ tank/pump to frame , use a new ground strap !

was key ON when you tested wires, cause power comes from ignition switch !

yes my key was on when I tested the wires. The pump itself is working perfectly, the truck even has more power since installing the new pump. But when I tested the three plug pigtail with the ignition on there was no power to any of the three wires. I assume the black is the ground wire and one is the power feed and the other the return line to the dashboard. But trying to figure out which is the main power feed.

  • ken hane Mar 31, 2013

I believe the main power feed is from the fuel pump relay, which inturn attaches to the junction block attached to firewall , the junction block is attached directly to the positive side of the battery !!! this junction block has @ least 5 fusible links , used to protect the circuits ,a fusible link looks like a heavy wire, when its actually not, its like a fuse, has a very thin wire inside that will blow just like a fuse, if its bad no power will get to the circuit it protects . has to be replaced , in likeness ! a test lamp will confirm its condition, since its dirrectly attached to battery. just like all the other fusible linkes on the junction block !

  • ken hane Mar 31, 2013

again, there is a separate ground wire from pump housing which needs to be re-ground to the frame , the gauge wire is a light gage, either PINK or PURPLE, HOPE THIS HELPS !

Okay here is the wonderful outcome. There are two plugs on this 2001 chevrolet blazer. one four wire and one three wire. the three wire is the oil pressure switch. the four wire is black, black and grey, purple, grey, grounds = black, black and grey main pump power is the grey. purple is the output to the guage. all fixed now the issue was a combination of a few things. I reran both grounds and found a break in the purple lead below the drivers door. after fixing purple lead the guage began to work and upon running two new ground leads the pump quieted down to perfect. :) thank you everyone for your assistance so now i know purple=guage grey=main power black=ground black/grey=ground

THERE SHOULD BE 3 WIRES, FROM PUMP/SENDER UNIT, 1 WIRE FOR PUMP POWER, 1 WIRE FOR GROUND, & 1 WIRE FOR FUEL GAGE, THE FUEL GAGE WIRE GOES DIRECTLY TO GAGE , INSPECT THIS WIRE , MAY CHANGE COLOR ON ITS WAY TO GAGE, WIRE MAY HAVE BEEN DAMAGED UNDER TRUCK, ALONG FRAME RAIL, OR HAS BECOME CORRODED, A BUMP IN THE WIRE INSULATION(CORROSION), ALSO, CHECK ALL GROUNDS, REPEAT, ALL GROUNDS TO FUEL PUMP CICUIT, EVEN IF THEY LOOK OK, THEY COULD BE BAD GROUNDS, YOU NEED GOOD GROUNDS TO COMPLETE ANY CIRCUIT !!! 2001 TRUCK, I'D QUESTION YOURS !!!!! WHAT SHAPE WAS YOUR WIRE HARNESS @ PUMP, THEY GO BAD, ANYTHING UNDER THE TRUCK !!!!!! STAY IN YOUCH, LIKE TO KNOW OUTCOME !

do you happen to know which color lead it is that is supposed to be the power supply for the fuel level sensor I tested all three leads and there is no power. Now I need to know which lead left middle or right is the power feed so I can go from the fuse panel with a new lead. to get my fuel guage to work again

SOURCE: replace fuel pump on a 2001 chevy cavalier

First, if your car still runs, pull the fuel pump relay, and start your car, letting it run until it dies. This will depressurize the fuel system. Then you must support the fuel tank, and take loose the straps that hold it up. Slowly lower the tank until you can unhook the tank filler hose and overflow hose by taking the clamps off and sliding the hoses off. lower it some more, and unhook the fuel lines; they require you to insert a special tool around the edge of the connection, however this can be improvised with screwdrivers or a piece of plastic or metal bent into a C shape. Next unhook the wire connection. Once you get it down, it's easiest to empty as much fuel as you can; as this will help you get it back into place. The fuel pump is inside the tank, which locks into place with a 1/8th turn. You will need a hammer and a brass punch for this job, as it needs to be tapped around to unlock. It will then lift out. Compare the two pump assemblies. The inside parts can be slightly different, but ensure that the fuel lines are IDENTICAL and the wire connection is IDENTICAL. The new one will come with a new silicone seal. Ensure that you don't put the new one in in such a way as the float doesn't bind, otherwise you'll be doing this procedure again if you don't like guessing how much gas you have. This can be a challenge to wrestle with putting the new one in, as you have to push it down to compress the new seal, and turn it to lock it. Once you get it started, you can let up and use the hammer and punch again to tighten it the rest of the way. Next, put it back together just as you took it apart, and don't forget to hook up the wires, hoses, and fuel lines. No tools required for the fuel lines, they just snap together. Once everything's tight and hooked up, put gas back in it, and if you haven't already, put the fuel pump relay back in. This you can do as soon as the car dies, and is completely optional if the car won't run at all. You are now ready to start it up, but turn the ignition on to the run position, wait a few seconds for the pump to pressurize, and then start it. Have fun, and feel free to ask any questions should you have any.

Chevy Blazer won't start; fuel pump needs replacing

Before spending several hundres on a fuel pump, I recommend doing a fuel pressure test. You can get a test gauge pretty cheap at a parts store. If the pump is junk, you raise the truck, lower the fuel tank, unplug the electronics from the pump at the top of the tank, then with a hammer and flat head scrwedrive, gently tap the lock ring in a counter clockwise direction until it pops off. Pull the pump assembly out and install the new one. Reverse directions to install.
