I have a 1992 Cavalier, 2.2 L. The car will start, but runs rough, always trying to stall out until it eventually does. I replaced the ignition module, coils, and the crank sensor. Still has the same symptoms. The computer keeps giving me a 42 code-electronic spark timing malfunction. Plugs and wires are good as well. I've read up on the other possibilities such as ground and what not. I don't know where to go from here. Someone suggested that a fried fusable link could be a possibility. Any suggestions on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Thank you for the suggestions. Just ran some tests. I have good compression, I have spark, and I have 42 psi fuel pressure. Now I'm ony getting a code 12 on the computer, which is a ground or open wire on terminal 10 of the ecm. I could really use a wiring diagram for that and the Ignition Control Module. Please and thank you!

The ground at/on the transmission is the usual cause and almost always the cause if it is a manual transmission car.Follow and pull ******* all ground wires you can find looking for broken/loose wires..Look closely at the grounds on the transmission.Clean any bad looking ground connections. You cannot add a ground wire, you have to make sure to ground the exiting ground wires.

the starter could be too close to the flywheel. try adding a couple of starter shims. it also could be drawing to many amps from internal corrosion from water intrusion.

SOURCE: 1995 sarari van stalls. replaced fuel pump

when you shut the truck off is/was there a swishing/bubbling noise coming from the tank?

Theres an orange rubber in the fuel tank that connects the fuel pump to the sender lines. if that rubber is torn you may get it to run but not stay running for more than a short period of time.

SOURCE: I have a 1992 gmc

CODE 42 Trouble Code 42 indicates that there may be a malfunction in the Electronic Spark Timing (EST) system.
During cranking, the timing is controlled by the ignition module while the ECM monitors the engine speed. When the engine speed exceeds 400 RPM, the ECM sends a BYPASS signal to the ignition module which switches the timing to ECM control. The ECM calculates what the timing should be then "tells" the ignition module via the EST circuit.
An open or ground in the EST circuit will stall the engine and set a Code 42. The engine can be re-started but it will run on ignition module timing.
The conditions for setting this code are:

  • System in BYPASS mode but the ignition module is still controlling timing
    - or -
  • Engine speed > 600 RPM with no EST pulses (ECM controlled timing) going to the ignition module for 200 msec.

Typical causes for this code include:
1) BYPASS line is open or grounded
2) EST line is open or grounded
3) PROM or CALPACK not seated properly in the ECM
4) Poor connections between ignition module and ECM
5) Poor routing of EST harness and/or poor quality ignition wires (EMI induced electrical noise)
6) Faulty or incorrect ignition module
7) Faulty ECM

SOURCE: 1994 GMC K1500. Ran great,

As per the problem which you mentioned in your question it says " Once it gets up to op temp, idles very rough, won't take fuel, eventually dies. Won't restart til cold."------- ------- Its low fuel pressure or problem with o2 sensor.----------

As per your problem mentioned, it indicates the problem with fuel pressure.-------- The fuel pressure is low.---------- First thing you can do is get the fuel pressure checked, this will confirm the problem. --------- If the pressure checked low that means problem is with faulty pump and clogged fuel filter.----------- If the fuel pressure is checked ok, then other possibility is faulty o2 sensor and crank sensor. The o2 sensors are before and after catalytic converter.-------Both the sensors are to be replaced.------ And as per you mentioned your problem, its quite possible that faulty o2 sensor will cause this problem.------ O2 sensor is the part which sends signal to ECM( the cars computer). It sends signal to computer about fuel / air mixture. How and when to send fuel to engine.--------- If o2 sends stops sending signal to cars computer then it will not send the fuel to engine.------- In your case the o2 sensor is getting overheated and this is stopping the o2 sensor from sending signal to ECM.But when your car shuts off the sensor gets cool and again it starts working.------ So as per problem, get both the o2 sensors checked and replaced.---------- Also get the crank sensor checked.--------This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

1992 cavalier runs rough,it will run for awhile but then will stall,it runs rough when you shake the car so i changed the fuel filter and pump still runs rough the OBD code is 66 what does that mean??

code 66 is the a/c pressure switch. which will not make car run rough and stall unless its back feeding power. run engine with ac off and unhook connector to high pressure switch. the most common reason for running rough could be a bad sparkplug or sparkplug wire, check the wires and plugs also check dist cap and rotor for arcing. and last is how old is the o2 sensor, a bad o2 sensor can also cause this problem.

2 problems - car stalls (usually when car idles for five minutes or more) wait few minutes start the car and it runs fine - took to repair shop they were able to recreate issue only once - when they hooked...

Sounds like a possible grounding problem.

When either wire in a circuit starts to loosen or rust/corrode it produces excess heat because its a high resistance connection. This was very common with the starting issue with older cars and their uncoated grounding straps especially in states with rust and road salt.

Intermittent problems like these ARE the hardest to find because the only come about when they feel like it.

One other idea. Bring a spray bottle of water with. Next time the car stalls hit the gas lines with it. Your year car with today's newer fuels could easily be vapor lock which is where the gas boils and it stalls until its cool again.

Runs rough and dies at low rpms

This can be a number of things but you can try process of elimination.

It could be:
1. Bad spark plugs, wires or rotor
2. Fuel pump ,not getting enough fuel, check and replace fuel filter
3. Not getting enough air, check filter or clog
4. Try getting a fuel injection cleaning.

Without seeing it or hands on it could be a number of things.

try checking those to start to narrow it down. And it always could be something else as well such as timing etc..

1992 chevy corsica runs rough, stall or dies after stopping

Sounds the EGR valve and EVP sen is bad even if you tested it. The EGR valve cntrols idle and if carbon up will make the car stall or idle high and low (rpms going up and down) This was common on all cars during that time. I would say replace the EGR valve and senosr. This should take care of the problem. One more thing have the fuel pressure check on the car.

Rough Idle - 1997 Cavalier RS 2.2L SFI-OHV 4-134

WEll it is possible it could be the idle air control. one the most comon problems is the fuel pressure regulator. To check it find the fuel rail the fuel regulator will have one vacuum hose on it remove the hose and check to see if it is wet with fuel if not have some one trun the key on or start the car if it leaks fuel out the regulator is bad. This would explain why its hard to start when it sits because it floods out the motor
