It did it before. at that time I replaced regulator and filter. then I replaced fuel pump relay and it ran without trouble for a year. a couple of days ago I drove it for thirty minutes, stopped for fifteen then it wouldn't restart for a couple of hours. drove it home without incident. the last time this happened it cut off while running then had to wait a couple of hours before it restart. could the fuel pump be pulling too much current, prematurely blowing the relay contacts? where can I find a good place to inset an ammeter and how much should it draw?

If it turns over but just won't fire and the timing sounds fine when it does run you might consider your ignition switch. Does it sound like it wants to fire but only just when you let go of the key?

This exact same thing happened to me....it ended up being the Mass Airflow Sensor. Replaced that and it has not happened since.

try replacing the gas cap,may be vapor locked, check throttle position sensor by holding the pedal to the floor while cranking,if it starts then replace the sensor,if not it probably works
SOURCE: 98 Ford F150 w/4.6l Wont start. Hear fuel pump
have diagnostic codes checked to see if you have a cam or crank sensor fault. make sure fuel pressure is at the required pressure, just testing to see if you have fuel at the valve is not enough. replace all spark plug wires. if you replaced two then all are just as old and even when they "look good" does not qualify as "they are good". Replace coil pack. start up drive away happy
Your problem may be one of the following:
First check or just replace the fuel filter. Usually located under the car in front of the rear axle, drivers side.
Next, the fuel pump may be worn out. Usually they get loud or stop working (running).
Next, check the fuel pressure regulator. Usually located on the front fuel rail, drivers side.
Is the vacuum line attached? Not leaking or rotted?
Also, do you smell a strong fuel odor when it won't start? May be one or more stuck-open injectors, or the coil pack is bad.
Checking these in the order listed will more than likely fix your problem.
The clicking noise indicates the battery can no longer run the starter, which also means the fuel pump won't run either.
It could be a fuel issue. How old is the fuel filter? Can you hear the pump run for a few seconds when you turn the key on? Try turning the key to ON without trying to start engine three times waiting for the pump to stop running each time. Then try to start the engine. If it starts, Its a form of Vapor lock caused by the extreme heat we have had lately, and a weak fuel pump.
If none of this works, try a new fuel filter first. From there have someone check the fuel pressure regulator and then the pump. If you are in need of a new pump, take my word for it and spend the money to get one from a Dealer, and not from your favorite parts store. Most parts store parts are made in China and they are JUNK.

This is the guy with intermittent starting trouble with a 99 ford taurus. Usually it atrts and runs like a new car. Smooth, quiet, dependable. This only happens occasionally. It is hard to hear the fuel pump if there is any ambient noise. When it happens you can hear it fire and try to start, so I don't believe it's ignition. When I rfeplace dthe fuel relay last time, it solved it for a yhear. Trying to avoid testing relay, because hard to work with such small pins. but i may have to ohm out the contacts while energized. I really want to know how to amp check pump and how much it should draw.donb
It's been awhile, but I finally replaced the fuel pump and solved the problem. Evidently the pump would get tight when warmed up and stop turning. A fuel pressure check was inconclusive. Changing fuel filter and pressure regulator did no good. I was avoiding changing the pump because I'd just had one shoulder operation and was headed for a second. It was a hard job and a true test of patience, but I love that ugly little car better than any I've ever had. Thanks for trying; I really do appreciate it. donb
